Advocate Health

Database Administration Intern

January - May 2019 • Milwaukee, WI

What I liked

I liked networking and working with the coworkers that I had for that short time. I also enjoyed learning more about the Bariatric Program at Aurora.

What I wish was different

I wish that I could've had a little more time there and a couple of more responsibilities while I was there. I did a database project but I wish I could've been more hands on with other projects to add more to my resume.

Advice

Even though the job deals with database input and information, just know that what you are doing is important and they use your work for something meaningful for all of the patients in the Bariatric Unit.

Certified Nursing Assistant

May 2019 • Milwaukee, WI

What I liked

I loved how Advocate Aurora gave me the opportunity to obtain my Certified Nursing Assistant license while a hired, paid, team member. I was a salaried employee and took my class with other employees exclusively. It was a great opportunity to learn and network across all of the metro-Milwaukee area Advocate Aurora hospitals.

What I wish was different

I wish that there was more clarity on my position post-certification. The relationship with the recruiters at Advocate Aurora is more distant than I can see beneficial. If I would have been given the opportunity to express my interests more frequently, I believe I would have been better placed.

Advice

To any pre-health student - getting your Certified Nursing Assistant license has been the best patient contact experience I have been able to get. Being able to learn as an Advocate Aurora team member improved my overall experience as an employee for this company.

Hospital Food Service Worker

April 2019 • West Allis, WI

What I liked

I love the working environment there and the experience that comes with the job. This job basically helps you get a glimpse of how it is in the medical field even if you're simply just delivering food to patients. You can get to build your social skills and also observe how things run in a hospital.

What I wish was different

Nothing.

Advice

Go out and do what's best for you! Apply to jobs that could potentially impact yourself and your career. This is also a good opportunity to work as a team and enhance your social skills.

Social Media Intern

August - November 2018 • Downers Grove, IL

What I liked

They were very accommodating to my schedule and I was able to work on/get insight on many different aspects of the Public Affairs department.

What I wish was different

I wish it had been paid, but they said they were trying to implement paid internships in the future.

Advice

Prepare to be flexible- every day is a little different depending on what promotions/campaigns are running and you won't know exactly what you're doing each day until you're doing it.

Food Service Worker

June 2019 • Milwaukee, WI

What I liked

I like that this hospital is always growing and we meet a lot of different people. Everyone is super friendly and will give help when asked for. Holidays and weekends are rotated and it is usually easy to find coverage when needed.

What I wish was different

The hiring process is kind of long due to different tests and orientation. It takes about 3 weeks to officially be hired.

Advice

I recommend to be very open minded towards people and be aware of things going on around you. You have to walk a lot also, so I would recommend having comfortable shoes. You should be adaptable to change because the hospital is constantly implementing new things in areas where it is felt needs improvements.

Hospital Volunteer

June - August 2018 • Milwaukee, WI

What I liked

What I wish was different

Advice

The process to begin volunteering took longer than I orginally expected. Before you begin your first independent shift, there is paperwork, health check(s), a general orientation, an orientation on your site depending on where you will be volunteering, and shadowing someone who has been in that role for some time. Between the number of requirements needed before you begin and scheduling them, prepare for there to be some time needed between when you initially show interest in volunteering and when you actually start.

What I liked

I really enjoyed the environment I worked in. This was my third summer interning with AHC and it was the best summer yet. Everyone genueinly cares about one another. Everyone is so connected through the system so getting connected to a wide variety of individuals was super easy. What I wish was different

Absoloutly nothing.

Advice

Take every opertunity given to you, even if it dosent seem like its something that would catch your attention. Its always great to learn about things that are diffrent from your intrests to keep your horizein and knowlege field open.
