Menards (11390)

Outside Yard TM

May 2018 - August 2019 • Homer Glen, IL

What I liked

Being outside and working with the other employees.

What I wish was different

My manager.

Advice

Definitely a good starting job, the customer service experience is really helpful and I would urge everyone to have at least one customer service/retail job during college. Even if it for just a short time.

Management Intern

June - September 2019 • Kalamazoo, MI

What I liked

I liked that the internship was designed in the way that - if you do well, you would receive the opportunity to hold a position within the company, even if not for the one you were working. For example, I was a management intern, but they considered hiring me for a purchasing role at their main office.

What I wish was different

I wish it would've been shorter. The internship was 16-weeks long. Usually, they are about 12-weeks. Also, I wish it paid more.

Advice

Do not pursue this internship unless you are passionate about retail. It is a demanding industry if you have no experience and the internship is designed in a way to prepare you specifically for a role at Menards or in retail management.

What I liked

It was great! the workers were all really nice and made it a great place to work. My supervisors were really knowledgable and were very helpful when I didn't know how to do anything. the work wasn't terrible and i looked forward to going back everyday to work more.

What I wish was different

Nothing really, the pay was good, co-workers were great, job was quite simplistic. Maybe allowing me to stay employed while i was at school but you can only wish for so much.

Advice

Really allowed me to learn more about how grocery stores run as well as how to paint buildings, rooms, houses, objects and how to do certain jobs now.

Cabinet and Appliance Salesman

June 2019 • Warsaw, IN

What I liked

Working with guests to design dream kitchens and helping them make those dreams become realities.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have had a job in the field of study that I am in. Working for a big company like menards has been a good experience but not something I want to stick to for a long time.

Advice

Just work your hardest whatever the job, even if you dont like it or its not what you want to be doing. People notice and it's a great way to speak into the lives of those around you.

What I liked

I work with a lot of people who have positive attitudes about working there, as well as strive to help everyone succeed. I've learned sooo much working at Menards and I get to build relationships with people in the local community.

What I wish was different

I wish I would've applied sooner, or at least started working sooner.

Advice

Finding a job that has a positive work environment is very important. It will make a huge difference even if it's not the job you originally had in mind.

June - August 2019 • Council Bluffs, IA

What I liked

I enjoy the family appeal to the job and the overall atmosphere with my superiors. I found that my schedule was very flexible in many different situations. I found that the job had its challenges that made me grow personally and as an employee.

What I wish was different

I do wish the weekly pay was better, but it is nice to get paid extra on weekends and holidays. I would also like to have the training a little more personalized to the employee rather than that of the department.

Advice

It is a great summer job and it always is a great way to get some experience in many different categories of business.

What I liked

I liked the fact that I got to learn a lot about the inter workings of a home. My major being architecture, I was interested to learn and see how plumbing works and what choices a homeowner can make to save money in their household.

What I wish was different

I wish the male customers would treat the female employees better because I had a lot of issues were men didn't think I knew what I was talking about.

Advice

I would say Menard's is a great place to start learning about being a homeowner (or renting an apartment, condo, duplex, etc.) because at some point everyone will have one of those and need to know how to fix thinks and problem solve in your own home.

Management Intern

May - August 2019 • Janesville, WI

What I liked

I enjoyed the manager that I was with. He was very fun, and welcoming. He was always willing to help. There was a good environment in the department I was assigned to.

What I wish was different

In my experience there, the internship program wasn’t followed the way corporate intended it to go. Corporate has a large packet that you must fill out through out the internship. At the end of the internship you are assigned to write a 7 page paper doing a SWOT analysis. During my time there as an intern there wasn’t much structure, and you are not given any legit management power. This internship is basically like any other retail job, you are just another team-member of a department.

Advice

If you end up doing this internship, just because you don’t have any actual power there doesn’t mean it isn’t helpful. I would recommend just being transparent and open to learning about the things in your department, polices that they enforce, and show your store you work hard. My store wants to keep me because of my hard work, and leadership that I have shown. Another recommendation I have is doing the “In-Home” training program they offer, this helps speed up your comprehension of products and helps assist guests.

Cashier

May 2019 • Grand Forks, ND

What I liked

I enjoy the interactions with my fellow coworker. We had a lot of fun working together and I gained valuable experience with personal skills and communication.

What I wish was different

I wish the scheduling had been a bit more flexible and transparent. The system and timeframe to request off certain days was not as simple as it could've been.

Advice

This was a summer job to gain some extra money over the summer. If you want a fun, casual job over the summer with kind managers and coworkers, this is a good place to work.
