Elections Intern

Provide administrative assistance to the city clerk, focusing on duties associated with administration of local and statewide elections.     

 

 Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform high level administrative and elections support for the city clerk and others as needed by assisting with absentee voting, testing and maintaining elections equipment, registering voters, and providing Election Day support in city hall and at polling places. 
  • Assist in efforts to advance racial equity by attending meetings, conducting research, making recommendations, and developing programs or policies in coordination with others. 
  • Assist in developing, scheduling, and facilitating training programs for election workers. 
  • Assist in developing, implementing, and facilitating voter outreach and education programming, including tabling at community events, aid in educational classes and working with youth interested in elections. 
  • Provide administrative support to candidates for local office including assisting with official procedures for filing for office, campaign finance reporting, and providing education on official rules for candidacy.  
  • Support the city clerk’s office, city council and Charter Commission as needed on other policy initiatives.  Gather information, perform research, and prepare documents as directed.   
  • Provide general administrative and support duties including data entry, filing, communications, meeting setup, report creation, website maintenance or updates, etc. Provide walk-in and telephone customer service to the public and other departments as needed.   
  • Collaborate with other city departments to work on events, communications, and administrative tasks as assigned. 
  • Perform other duties or special projects as assigned. 

 

 

 Minimum Qualifications:

  • Current student/recent graduate of a bachelor’s or master’s degree program with coursework in Political Science, Elections Administration, Public Administration or related area. 
  • Strong interest in election administration, city clerk duties, and other aspects of public administration. 
  • Ability to work independently, maintain confidentiality, and prioritize work efficiently. 
  • Proven ability to multitask, track and coordinate events and complex or long-term activities in departments and throughout an organization. 
  • Must be available to work a regular schedule in the office throughout the election cycle, including on Election Day. 
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends for elections-related activities. 
  • Must be able remain neutral and non-partisan in all job-related activities.  
  • Proven ability to provide quality customer service and communicate effectively with people from all cultures and backgrounds.  
  • Excellent computer proficiency, including spreadsheet and word processing applications. 
  • Internship is limited to a one-year maximum length of service. 

 

 Desired Qualifications:

  • Previous elections experience in an administrative capacity, such as an election worker in a polling place, or other related government duties. 
  • Experience with coordinating events, activities, and special programs. 
  • Demonstrated cultural competence and comfort with supporting the city’s strategic objectives for advancing racial equity.
