Digital Storytelling Intern

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Southwest Digital Storytelling

The Southwest Region of USFWS: Our Region encompasses Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Oklahoma. We work with a variety of partners and other agencies, communities, tribal governments, conservation groups, business interests, landowners and concerned citizens to conserve, protect, and enhance fish, wildlife, and their habitat. We have 47 National Wildlife Refuges, eight National Fish Hatcheries, one Fish Health Center, four Fishery and Wildlife Conservation Offices, and seven Ecological Services Field Offices that all contribute to conservation and recreational opportunities for the American public.

Do you have a love for conservation storytelling and experience with interactive web-based product design and writing for the web and social media? As a Digital Storytelling intern for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Southwest Region, contribute to the update and creation of science communication products that will be featured on the USFWS website and other digital platforms.

CART, the Conservation and Adaptation Resources Toolbox, is a peer-to-peer knowledge sharing platform that aims to improve coordination around key conservation challenges in the Southwest, and beyond. A resource for conservation practitioners and resources managers, CART supports knowledge sharing and tool development. In particular, CART Case Studies document conservation action completed by USFWS and partners. The selected candidate will lead the migration of current CART Case Studies and materials to the USFWS website, including both print and virtual content. This will require reading comprehension and editing, choosing appropriate images, and a general understanding of basic internet functionality in addition to web content management systems. Other tasks: writing engaging content for the website, helping to create content for the USFWS’s social media platforms, organizing photographs and collecting metadata.

We are looking for resourceful applicants who are working toward or recently completed a degree and have a passion for science communication. US Citizenship is Required.

Candidates must have strong writing skills, comfort utilizing a wide variety of digital platforms, and a familiarity with web conventions and standards as well as content management systems such as Drupal. The intern will need to work both independently and with a small number of staff. Applicants will receive first consideration with academic disciplines and areas of interest related to this position: writing, education, communication, web design, environmental studies or science, graphic design, and biology.

Work can be done remotely or based in Albuquerque, NM
