ABOUT LAUSD BOARD MEMBER NICK MELVOIN

Nick Melvoin is proud to serve the dynamic communities of District 4 on the Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education. Nick’s work is focused on increasing parent and community engagement, transparency and accountability; directing more resources to schools; protecting our most vulnerable students; and bringing a new spirit of partnership and collaboration to LA’s public schools. He has chaired the district’s “Committee of the Whole,” and currently chairs the Board’s Facilities and Procurement Committee, bringing a transparent conversation about LA Unified’s budgetary process and priorities to the public. Prior to his election, Nick worked as a teacher, public interest attorney, nonprofit director, and an active board member of a number of community and political organizations. Nick has also worked in the Obama White House and the US Attorney’s office. Nick is a graduate of Harvard College, NYU School of Law (Root-Tilden-Kern Scholar), and Loyola Marymount University’s School of Education. He was a recent recipient of the Los Angeles Young Democrat of the Year Award

Nick represents Board District 4, which includes the communities of Brentwood, Del Rey, Encino, Hollywood, Mar Vista, Marina Del Rey, Pacific Palisades, Playa Del Rey, Playa Vista, Reseda, Tarzana, Topanga, Westchester, West Hollywood, Westwood, Woodland Hills & Venice.


 

OVERVIEW

The members of the Board District 4 team are each responsible for various roles in community engagement, communications, policy, and operations. The student worker will work in close collaboration with the team and stakeholders by supporting various projects to help ensure all LAUSD students graduate college and career ready. 

Example Duties: 

  • Organize and help manage a case management system: You will be responsible for inputting and tracking constituent outreach in a central office system. In addition, you may be asked to compile summaries and create reports on the data collected. To be successful in this role, you would be organized, pay close attention to detail, and be open to learning a new system. 
  • Support constituents and stakeholders: You may be asked to answer phones or respond to constituent emails with clarity and empathy, and provide information to the appropriate staff members. To be successful in this portion of your role, you would have strong verbal communication skills, patience, and the ability to gather and relay information clearly over the phone and in writing.
  • Communicate through speech and writing: You may be responsible for assisting the Communications Director with social media posts, drafting certificates, writing emails, or other content related to education and office priorities. To be successful in this portion of your role, you would be a good writer, able to digest and explain things clearly to a general audience. 
  • Be a team player: We are a small office and there will be a culture of pitching in to help others when needed. We believe in urgency, courage, hard work, solving problems, and being kind to others.

  • Experience using communications skills through participation in clubs or extracurricular activities

Compensation: $17.28 per hour

 

Hours & Schedule: The anticipated term of this position is from August 19 -  December 6, 2024; however, start and end dates may be flexible based on the student's school schedule. The position requires 10-15 hours per week, depending on availability. 
 

* The hybrid work model will include in-person work at LAUSD Downtown Headquarters as well as remote work.
