Job Summary

This position is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, diagnosis, repair, installation and alteration of HVAC and Refrigeration systems to protect and enhance department assets.

 

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday with frequent on call weekends during the heating season. The nature of work requires irregular, unpredictable and particularly long hours.

 

Job Responsibilities

  • Perform HVAC Inspections, Maintenance and Repairs - Perform HVAC inspections, maintenance, repair and related activities on departmental assets via a service vehicle. Perform activities on Steam Boilers, Compressors, Receivers, Condensers, Chillers, Cooling Towers, Pumps, Valves, piping systems, duct systems and other various systems.
  • Perform HVAC System Installations - Perform HVAC project installation work on steam boilers, hot water boilers, water chillers, pumps, valves and associated piping systems.
  • Perform Emergency HVAC Repairs - Perform emergency repairs on HVAC equipment during and outside of scheduled work hours. Routinely on call during the heating season.
  • Equipment Maintenance - Inspect and maintain all equipment and tools related to the performance of job duties.
  • Administration - Process purchase requests; inventory supplies; process electronic work orders, review blueprints, building codes and technical manuals; assist with project management; maintain logs; ensure relevant safety codes and regulations are followed.
  • Special assignments and projects - Participate on special project teams and communication efforts.
  • Ability to properly and safely operate vehicles, welders, recovery equipment, heavy machinery, hand tools, power tools, testing equipment, computers, and general office equipment.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 65 lbs.; and ability to push and pull up to 100 lbs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required License/Certification, Education and Experience

  • Current residency within the State of Wisconsin upon application required
  • Valid State of Wisconsin Driver’s License required and must be maintained throughout employment
  • High School diploma or GED required
  • At least one (1) year or more of work experience in HVAC installation required
  • At least five (5) years or more of work experience in HVAC service, repair and maintenance required
  • Type I, II, III or Universal CFC/EPA Handler certification required
  • Wisconsin Steamfitter or Refrigeration Apprenticeship required
  • Journeyman HVAC Service Fitter with competency in self-directed repair and diagnosis of HVAC systems preferred
  • Journeyman HVAC Service Fitter with competency in installation of equipment, piping and control systems preferred
  • Previous work experience with blueprints preferred

Note: This Original Examination is open to current residents of the State of Wisconsin. In accordance with Rule III section 11 of the Civil Service Rules a non-competitive examination will be held for this position. The non-competitive examination will consist of a review of candidate materials, education and related experience.
