Environmental Health Assistant

Position Summary   

Provide assistance with environmental health inspections, and transient non-community water system testing within Barron County in accordance with statutes and regulations.

Essential Functions   

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Other duties may be required and assigned. 

 1.           80% Assist in wells inspection and sample water at transient non-community water systems. Complete appropriate paperwork and maintain correct documentation. 

2.            10% Assist in inspections of food, recreation and other licensed facilities and human health hazards. 

3.            10% Other duties as assigned, including job shadowing opportunities.

  • Knowledge of basic principles and practices of environmental sanitation.
  • Ability to perform thorough investigations and inspections.
  • Ability to correctly interpret water test results.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and written.
  • Ability to keep accurate records and write clear and concise reports.
  • Ability to apply time-management skills and ability to prioritize job-related activities.
  • Ability to demonstrate leadership, independent judgment, and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to understand and effectively carry out verbal and written instructions.

 Required Education, Experience, Licensing, and Certifications 

  • Must successfully pass caregiver and criminal background check.
  • Preference given to those with at least 2 years in an environmental health program at accredited college or other science program with focus on biology/chemistry.
  • Current WI driver’s license with access to insured and reliable vehicle.

  • Mobility to move through and work in a variety of locations such as basements.
  • Ability to work with various office equipment, including but not limited to fax, copy machines, telephone, computer, calculator, etc.
  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, twist, climb, squat, lift, and kneel as needed. 4
  • Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet and limbs in performing movements requiring skill and training, such as data entry.
  • Ability to travel to various facilities/buildings and perform work in a variety of weather conditions.
  • This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, frequently requires standing, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions and occasionally requires walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and reaching with hands and arms.
  • Work has standard vision requirements.
  • Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
  • Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
  • Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data and observing general surroundings and activities.
  • Work has no exposure to environmental conditions.
  • Work is generally in a moderately noisy office setting (e.g. business office, light traffic).
