Position Overview
The Division of Rehabilitation Services is seeking to hire a teacher, teaching students with low vision or blindness for the Illinois School for the Visually Impaired (ISVI). This position performs highly specialized teaching for students with visual impairments and/or multiple disabilities in standard and/or special educational courses in the program and provides Braille instruction and/or produces Braille materials to blind and/or visually impaired students.
Job Responsibilities
- Teaches standard and special education course work by adapting and revising best practices or specialized teaching techniques to meet specific needs and learning characteristics of visually impaired students.
- Conducts ongoing evaluations of assigned students.
- Assists in the development and continuing evaluation of a sequential instructional curriculum to meet the needs of each student assigned.
- Plans and assists appropriate school staff in providing semi-curricular and extra-curricular.
- Prepares daily attendance reports.
- Supervises the care and use of equipment and supplies.
- Performs other duties as assigned or required which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires possession of a current and valid Illinois State Board of Education-issued Professional Educator License with a Blind/Visually Impaired endorsement in teaching students who are Blind or Visually Impaired (K-12).
Preferred Qualifications
- One (1) year of professional experience working with trends in teaching UEB Braille and Nemeth with students who are blind.
- One (1) year of professional experience utilizing current educational trends, techniques, and best practices.
- One (1) year of professional experience preparing written documentation related to student performance and education.
- One (1) year of professional experience using the tools, materials and equipment associated with required coursework.
- One (1) year of professional experience maintaining patience and tolerance while working with students with a wide range of behaviors.
- One (1) year of professional experience maintaining effective working relationships with staff, assigned students and parents.
Conditions of Employment
- Requires proficiency in Braille when instructing students who are blind, visually impaired, or deaf/blind.
- Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.
- Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.
Work Hours: Mon - Fri, 8:00am - 3:45pm
