Systems Engineer

Systems Engineer (Hybrid)

Frequent travel to power plants (Located in MN and Jamestown, ND)

The Systems Engineer is responsible for the analysis, design, development, implementation, and support of existing or new endpoint devices, systems infrastructure, systems and endpoint management solutions, business services, and cyber-security programs specific to the power supply division and generating plant sites.


Key responsibilities:

  • Provides planning and design of systems infrastructure, architecture, and endpoints for new systems/technologies and enhancements to support plant operations and maintenance.
  • Works with key stakeholders to elicit requirements related to systems infrastructure, architecture, and endpoint devices for new sites, systems/technologies, or enhancements.
  • Provides tasks and estimates for project plans related to plant systems infrastructure and endpoint deliverables.
  • Recommends and develops standard systems and endpoint architectures, design, and configurations.
  • Participates in architecture and security reviews.
  • Provides technical support of systems infrastructure and endpoints to ensure operational excellence.
  • Coordinates upgrades and hardware/software patches with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) while maintaining business availability needs.
  • Creates and maintains documentation and diagrams related to systems architecture and design and endpoint standard and configurations.
  • Identifies requirements for automated system alerts and monitoring.
  • Provides on-call support for emergencies outside of normal office hours by telephone and/or on-site.
  • Provides support of production, development, and test (QA) systems including backup and recovery, problem analysis, and resolution.
  • Provides support of endpoint hardware, configurations and applications including problem analysis, troubleshooting, and resolution.
  • Provides support of plant utility and business productivity tools/applications including problem analysis and resolution.
  • Builds, tests, deploys, and maintains standard operating system images, and manages operating system patches.
  • Ensures license compliance for core systems and endpoint software.
  • Subscribes to vendor notifications for security vulnerabilities and patches.
  • Performs research and analysis of systems infrastructure and endpoint, technologies, tools, and architectures to meet current and future business requirements.

Education & experience

A bachelor’s degree in a technology related field and 7+ years’ experience building and supporting technology infrastructure or 2+ years post high school education or applicable training in a technology related field and 9+ years’ experience building and supporting technology infrastructure.


Knowledge, skills, & abilities

  • Knowledge of and skill in desktops, servers, networks, operating systems, storage, backup/recovery, and security
  • Knowledge and experience with Windows Server and Workstation platform, Active Directory, VMWare/virtual machine management, basic to intermediate networking and antivirus and backup/recovery software
  • Knowledge of business continuity and disaster recovery (DR) plans; ability to participate in DR testing
  • Skill in project management within area(s) of expertise including prioritization, work sequence, and scheduling
  • Skill in verbal and written communication to communicate document processes and procedures and technical issues
  • Ability to administer network and system security devices, such as firewalls
  • Ability to manage storage space, perform backups, and recover systems
  • Ability to research, analyze, and make recommendations related to infrastructure technologies
  • Ability to develop recommendations for resolution of operational problems and issues
  • Ability to work in and contribute to cross functional teams
