Student Trainee (Biological Science Technician) - Summer

The student biological science technician will implement established natural resource management projects and field research by following instructions and standardized procedures to collect and organize field data. The incumbent will regularly assist the field biologist in habitat restoration activities that include removal and control of invasive species and re-introduction and care of native plant species. The incumbent will assist in providing technical information, ensure quality control, and solve logistical or operational problems within the scope of their knowledge and authority. The incumbent will assist in providing advice, assistance and training to support the park’s landscape restoration volunteer programs (i.e., Habitat Restoration Events) on tasks including treatment and removal of invasive and exotic species and planting and caring for native plant species. Work will primarily be in an outdoor setting. Required training will be provided by the park.

Mississippi National River and Recreation Area (MISS) is a partnership-based national park in Minnesota. MISS is an urban park encompassing a 72-mile, 54,000 acre urban corridor along the river. MISS manages the Coldwater Spring Unit, a springhouse and reservoir that are contributing elements to the Fort Snelling National Historic Landmark. MISS also coordinates landscape restoration activities with 27 local governmental units on public lands throughout the corridor through an established Habitat Restoration Program (HRE) and Friends group, Mississippi Park Connection. The HRE program focuses heavily on engaging volunteers to complete natural resource management goals and objectives and volunteerism activities at Coldwater Spring and on lands managed by partner agencies. The student biological science technician serves in the resource management division of the park and will work closely with several permanent staff members. This position reports to the Division Manager of Resource Management.
