2023 Summer Internship - Human Resources Opportunities

NiSource Internship Program Introduction 

The 12-week NiSource Internship program starting May 22nd, is a multi-faceted development experience that provides our interns with challenging and meaningful work that impacts the communities we serve. As a NiSource intern, you will have the opportunity to learn from senior leadership and build professional relationships with employees across our company. The NiSource Internship program also incorporates workshops to learn about NiSource, the energy industry and infuses learning and development opportunities that sharpen your professional skills. The robust program will aid in building the fundamentals needed to enter the energy workforce upon graduation.

NiSource is currently hiring for 3 different HR internships. Each position will either be based out of the Columbus, OH or Merrillville, IN, and will report onsite a minimum of two days per week.

Human Resources Services and Solutions Internship Summary (Columbus, OH)
The intern will support the Human Resources Services and Solutions team. The intern will have exposure to data analytics, systems, payroll, employee relations, labor relations and training. The intern will be introduced to the fundamentals of employment law, policy management/governance and the investigative process.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Use NiSource’s vision, mission and values to guide decisions as they relate to the employee experience
  • Support engagement survey action planning execution
  • Review state specific code of conduct documents and recommend rule alignment to ensure a consistent employee experience
  • Gather data from various reports to compile the ER dashboard
  • Prepare questions for an employee relations investigation
  • Create draft policy statements for committee review/discussion
  • Complete a summary of investigation report for an ethics case
  • Observe fact findings and investigations
  • Gather evidence to support fact finding and investigation determinations

Leadership Development & Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Internship Summary (Merrillville, IN)
The intern will support the Talent Strategy & Leadership Development and Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion teams. The intern will have exposure to employee resource groups, senior leadership, HR analytics, and systems i.e., SuccessFactors, SharePoint, etc. The intern will be introduced to strategies around talent management, learning and development, and DE&I.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Support design, development, and deployment of enterprise-wide learning offerings
  • Support performance enablement activities for mid-year performance review process
  • Administer and analyze talent data to drive key talent processes and business solutions
  • Work closely with DE&I VP to assist with programs and events
  • Support the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I) leader to provide project support, lead assigned projects with leadership oversight, and support employee resource groups (ERGs)
  • Conduct DE&I research as it relates to culture and employee engagement trends, best practices, and external benchmarks and prepare recommendations based on findings
  • Provide project support for the Employee Resource Groups ERGs, including support of ERG leaders, coordination of events and initiatives

Talent Acquisition Internship Summary (Columbus, OH)
The Talent Acquisition (TA) intern will support the Talent Sourcing & Engagement team, Field & High-Volume and Corporate Recruiting Team to provide a well-rounded Talent Acquisition internship experience. The intern will have exposure to orientation and onboarding as well as training in sourcing activities. Additionally, the TA intern will be introduced to the fundamentals of full life cycle recruiting and providing an enviable candidate experience.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Understand the organization’s mission, vision, and core values to be able to communicate our message to passive or active applicants as we engage through social media campaigns or sourcing events.  
  • Creatively source and connect with candidates through relationship building, internet searches, existing talent pool database searches; generate interest and convert them to applicants. 
  • Bring new, fresh and creative sourcing ideas 
  • Coordinate with teams across all NiSource locations to ensure new hires receive the materials and equipment needed to be successful, safe, and feel welcome on Day 1 
  • Train to deliver new employee orientation program covering introductions, benefits, company values, brand, policies, and procedures
  • Correspond with new hires before their start date and serve as their point of contact prior to their first day 
  • Perform resume reviews and phone screens to qualify candidates, then facilitate job offer process between successful candidate and hiring leader 
  • Communicate important employment information during delivery of employment offers (e.g. benefits, compensation, non-compete agreements) Maintain all pertinent applicant and interview data in the Applicant Tracking System (Workday), ensuring maximum usage of the system 
  • Execute on diversity and community recruiting initiatives in support of organization’s diverse hiring goals and objectives 
  •  Manage sourced candidate through the end-to-end recruiting process partnering closely with Recruiting Partners to ensure a positive candidate experience
  • Research and collaborate with the Talent Acquisition team on recruiting projects
  • Successful candidate will start in summer 2023

Required Qualifications for 3 HR Internships:
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited university with major in related discipline such as Human Resources Management, Organizational Development/Effectiveness or Organization Communications
  • Completion of intermediate-level coursework; rising junior or senior
  • Have experience and passion for inclusiveness and diversity 
  • Strong time-management and organizational skills 
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Self-motivated with questioning mindset
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding employee situations
  • Solid organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work 40 hrs/week during the 12-week summer internship program in a hybrid (office/home) work environment.
  • Authorized to work in the United States without requiring sponsorship
