Summary
Engineering intern position with an emphasis on providing assistance to the Engineering Staff. This position provides assistance with asset management, natural resources, developments, capital improvement planning and projects, transportation planning and projects and traffic safety.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assist with the field inspection of municipal improvement projects and developer-installed public improvement projects for conformance with engineering plans and specifications and construction and safety standards. 
  • Assists with use of GIS and survey equipment to collect public infrastructure asset data, storm water pond maintenance, tree inventory, ADA infrastructure, pavement management ratings, and other natural resource assets. 
  • Assists with use of traffic data collection equipment to collect traffic volume, speed data and video data.
  • Assists with the collection and review of as-built record plans of municipal improvement projects and developer-installed public improvement projects.
  • Performs other related duties as apparent or assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
High School graduate enrolled in an accredited college, university program or technical degree program for environmental engineering, civil engineering, construction engineering, engineering technician, natural resources or closely related program. Valid driver’s license.
 
Desirable Qualifications
Fluency in a second language, in addition to English, that has a recognized presence in the community (Spanish, Russian, Hmong, etc.).
Additional Information
  • Familiarity of modern principles and practices of civil engineering and/or natural resources. 
  • Familiarity in the use of AutoCAD and AutoCAD Civil 3D and ability to utilize pavement management and GIS programs.
  • Ability to communicate ideas and explanations clearly in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence, that conform to prescribed style and format.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply proper English, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and specifications, legal documents and professional journals.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. 
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts, knowledge of algebra, geometry and trigonometry and knowledge of surveying.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Ability to use common Microsoft Office programs, such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint, as well as web-based email and timesheet software.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, professional working relationships with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Ability to work with the public in a friendly, tactful manner.
