Civil Engineering Intern

We are looking for three individuals who are interested in growing their careers in Civil Engineering and will complement our already strong and outstanding team of professionals!
 
2023 Internships:
Under the general direction of the Project Engineer, performs miscellaneous fieldwork, construction-related inspection tasks, field construction verification with record drawings, geographic information system (GIS) data collection, and mapping assists with web-based private facility inspections, community education, and outreach activities, and performs other various field and clerical assignments as required. 

The internships provide college students interested in civil engineering and municipal public works the opportunity to gain valuable work experience during the summer months by first-hand observation of the operation and organization of a local government public works department.
 
Intern Hours & Expectations:
The positions are full-time (40 hours a week) in the summer with the hopes of continued availability to work 15-20 hours a month during the school year. Hours of work during the school year are flexible and will be coordinated with the Staff Engineer.
Applicants should be self-motivated, thorough, disciplined, and exhibit an interest in municipal public works. Our ideal candidates can work well both as part of a team and independently. 
 RESPONSIBILITIES:
Intern Responsibilities:
  • Assist in gathering information and data by field and office research.
  • Conduct spreadsheet analysis.
  • Perform basic surveying using city-provided equipment (e.g. auto level, global positioning system (GPS) equipment, and/or smart devices) to obtain location and elevation information of features.
  • Perform mathematical computations involving algebra and statistics.
  • Draft preliminary and final construction drawings, and prepares exhibits for presentation.
  • Assist in the preparation of quantity and cost estimates.
  • Inspect public works construction projects such as sanitary sewers, storm sewers, stormwater facilities, water mains, curb and gutter, and pavement.
  • Prepare record drawings for public works projects using computer aided drafting and design (CADD) software.
  • Assist with web-based private facility inspections.
  • Assist with master planning and construction grant activities.
  • Perform additional assignments and responsibilities as assigned or requested by the supervisor.
 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Intern Requirements: 
  • Educational background in engineering including drafting, plan reading, basic principles of surveying, and training or experience in utilization of CADD, GIS, computer spreadsheets, and word processing programs.
  • No previous work experience is required.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license for the duration of the appointment.

Physical Demands:
Light Work: Exerting 51-75 lbs seldom. Exerting 0-50 lbs occasionally. Frequently standing, walking, and sitting.

Work Environment:
Both: Inside and outside. A job is considered "both" if the activities occur inside or outside in approximately equal amounts. Inside work is 25% of the time. Outside work (no effective protection from weather) is 75% of the time. Exposure to hazards or risk of bodily injury, moderate noise, and dust are seldom. Exposure to heat/cold extreme and temperature changes occasionally.
