The New JerseyDepartment of Transportation (NJDOT) is seeking currently enrolled college students who are interested in hourly employment opportunities this upcoming summer. As the State's Department of Transportation, the NJDOT plans, designs, builds, and maintains New Jersey's transportation network. The Department is now offering hourly positions that will allow students to work on an hourly basis in the summer of 2023 (between May and August). Hours of work will be determined by the hiring unit, but will not exceed 40 hours per week. It should be noted that the position does not offer a benefits package. Division Description: The Division of Bridge Engineering & Infrastructure Management plans, organizes, oversees, and implements the various work programs in the offices of Structural Design & Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Evaluation & Bridge Management, and Structural & Railroad Engineering Services. This Division is also responsible for implementing and maintaining comprehensive management systems to preserve and improve the transportation infrastructure of New Jersey's highway network. These management systems include bridge, geotechnical and highway railroad crossings. In addition, this Division is responsible for the safety inspection of all bridges, railroad crossings, state - owned sign structures, minor bridges, culverts, dams, and tunnels in New Jersey. Unit Description: The Structural Value Solutions (SVS) Unit provides necessary support to Project Scope Development in the determination of a project's final scope of work and conducts QualityAssurance reviews on all capital projects throughout the design process. The SVS unit also reviews and recommends approvals for all Design Exceptions for bridge clearances and reviews Value Engineering (VE) construction proposals for all capital projects. This unit provides necessary support when requested to Project Management, Construction, and Operations in the resolution of field problems on construction projects. Position Description: Civil Engineer w/emphasis on Structural Design/Engineering Duties of Position: • Assist in providing necessary support to Capital Program Management (CPM) project scope development in the determination of a project's final scope of work. • Assist in performing Structural QualityAssurance and Conceptual reviews on all CPM, TOS&S, Emergency and Local Aid projects throughout the design and construction processes. • Assist in reviewing and evaluating structural related design exceptions and waivers. • Assist in reviewing and evaluating Value Engineering (VE) construction and design proposals for all capital projects. • Assist in providing necessary support to Project Management, Construction Services, and Operations on all projects. • Assist in conducting field investigations of assigned projects as required. 
Preferred Skills: • Strong written and verbal communication skills. • Understanding of structural engineering concepts. • Ability to read and understand structural plans and drawings. • Technical background having taken most of the coursework required to design structures using steel and concrete. • Skills in AutoCAD are desirable but not required. • Organization and communication skills desired. • Ability to multi - task and work with multiple clients and on multiple projects. • Ability to think through problems, break down tasks, and prioritize work. • Physically able to visit construction sites, meet with architects and contractors, and be able to spend 5 - 10% of the week outside the office.
