The New JerseyDepartment of Transportation (NJDOT) is seeking currently enrolled college students who are interested in hourly employment opportunities this upcoming summer. As the State's Department of Transportation, the NJDOT plans, designs, builds, and maintains New Jersey's transportation network. The Department is now offering hourly positions that will allow students to work on an hourly basis in the summer of 2023 (between May and August). Hours of work will be determined by the hiring unit, but will not exceed 40 hours per week. It should be noted that the position does not offer a benefits package. Division Description: The Division of Bridge Engineering & Infrastructure Management plans, organizes, oversees, and implements the various work programs in the offices of Structural Design & Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Evaluation & Bridge Management, and Structural & Railroad Engineering Services. This Division is also responsible for implementing and maintaining comprehensive management systems to preserve and improve the transportation infrastructure of New Jersey's highway network. These management systems include bridge, geotechnical and highway railroad crossings. In addition, this Division is responsible for the safety inspection of all bridges, railroad crossings, state - owned sign structures, minor bridges, culverts, dams, and tunnels in New Jersey. Unit Description: The Structural Evaluation and Bridge Management Unit is responsible for the safety inspection of all bridges, tunnels, and other structures in New Jersey (State, County, Toll, etc.) in accordance with the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) & National Tunnel Inspection Standards (NTIS). The Unit accomplishes this mission through inspection projects using in - house and consultant staff for the State and County Bridges and oversight of the inspection programs for the toll agency bridges. The Unit is also responsible for the inspection programs for State owned sign structures, pedestrian bridges, culverts and dams, as well as County culverts. Structural Evaluation maintains databases for all assets. The data is used by the Bridge Management System staff within the unit to identify and prioritize Capital Project needs and initiate new Project starts. We respond to emergencies and evaluate damage to bridges and other assets under emergency situations (bridge hits, scour, fire, hurricanes) and design repairs. We prepare load ratings of all bridges and make load posting recommendations. We have a section that is responsible for assessing state bridges for use by overweight (permit) trucks and material transfer vehicles through our web based Superload permitting program.
Position Description: Civil Engineer w/emphasis on Structural Evaluation / Asset Management Duties of Position: • Assist in the inspection of bridges in compliance with the federallymandated National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS). • Assist in the scheduling and coordination of Traffic Protection for in - house bridge inspection projects. • Using field - gathered inspection data, generate inspection reports and Structural Inventory and Appraisal and National Bridge Element data sheets. • Maintain bridges, culverts, sign structures, and other highway structures in a safe condition by designing and recommending priority repairs and/or load posting as necessary. • Assist in the oversight and management of consultant inspection projects involving bridges, sign structures, or other highway structures. • Complete other assigned projects of various work programs for Structural Evaluation and Bridge Management. • Evaluate and provide recommendations for overweight vehicles traversing state routes.
