The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) is seeking currently enrolled college students who are interested in hourly employment opportunities this upcoming summer. As the State's Department of Transportation, the NJDOT plans, designs, builds, and maintains New Jersey's transportation network. The Department is now offering hourly positions that will allow students to work on an hourly basis in the summer of 2023 (between May and August). Hours of work will be determined by the hiring unit, but will not exceed 40 hours per week. It should be noted that the position does not offer a benefits package. Division Description: The Division of Bridge Engineering & Infrastructure Management plans, organizes, oversees, and implements the various work programs in the offices of Structural Design & Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Evaluation & Bridge Management, and Structural & Railroad Engineering Services. This Division is also responsible for implementing and maintaining comprehensive management systems to preserve and improve the transportation infrastructure of New Jersey's highway network. These management systems include bridge, geotechnical and highway railroad crossings. In addition, this Division is responsible for the safety inspection of all bridges, railroad crossings, state - owned sign structures, minor bridges,culverts, dams, and tunnels in New Jersey. Unit Description: The Geotechnical Engineering staff performs and approves geotechnical engineering designs for foundations for highway related structures such as bridges, sign structures, culverts, retaining walls and noise walls. This unit also provides design and review of new roadway foundations, embankments and cuts. In addition, this unit prepares technical specifications, engineering estimates and construction schedules for the geotechnical work. They evaluate and implement new geotechnical engineering technology. Construction and Maintenance Operations are supported by providing general geotechnical guidance, approving pile driving hammer systems, reviewing test data from piles, drilled shafts, micro - piles, soil nails, embankment geotechnical instrumentation and then recommending production order lengths or criteria to Resident Engineers. Position Description: •Review and learn to make recommendations to in - house and consultant soil and rock laboratory testing programs required for the design of highway structures •Learn how to create a soil profile at a structure •Review construction plans, specifications, engineer estimates and construction schedules at the various stages of project completion with regard to the geotechnical engineering aspects of projects and learn what should be shown on the contract documents as well as constructability issues •Review drilled shaft Crosshole Sonic Logging test results, Tomography results, Bi - Directional Load Cell results and coring results for the proposed drilled shaft foundations and learn what recommendations are to be made to the contractor for production shafts •Learn how to investigate and make recommendations for Geotechnical related issues arising during construction •Learn some of the NJDOT Standard Specifications and NJDOT Design Standards that apply to Geotechnical Engineering
PreferredQualities/Experience: •Third year student pursuing a degree in Geotechnical Engineering •Proficient in Microsoft Office applications •Familiaritywith Soil Testing in Laboratory Work Authorization: Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States according to the Department of Homeland Security, United States Citizenship and Immigration Services regulations.
