Youth Development Program Coordinator

Job Summary:  
The Youth Development Program Coordinator will utilize a combination of national, local, and self-developed curricula that attempt to integrate the fundamental concepts of education, the arts, humanities, technology, mental and physical well-being with youth development principles, sparking young people’s creativity and building critical learning and life skills. A candidate will be successful if they develop a program that: 
  • Provides safe and healthy spaces for youth 
  • Is asset based and youth driven 
  • Fosters the development of positive relationships and social skills 
  • Sets high expectations for growth and learning 
  • Is holistic and inclusive to youth of all ages

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Plans, prepares, creates, organizes and delivers weekly lessons, activities, and games that are rooted in the concepts of experiential and project-based learning and promote and stimulate participation. 
  • Instructs and directs varied activities, applying effective classroom management. 
  • Ensures programs, services and activities that prepare youth for success, promoting safety of members and quality in program at all times. Provides guidance and role modeling to members. 
  • Ensures quality improvement by monitoring and evaluating program achievement against target goals, recommending modifications that respond to member needs and interests and participating in weekly staff meetings. 
  • Works with community organizations to provide or expand co-curricular programming which supports student success. 
  • Ensures a healthy and safe environment, supervising members in program area. 
  • Manages administrative systems by registering new members and participating in their club orientation process. 
  • Participates in program/service outcome measurement processes and other evaluations programs including BGCA’s annual NYOI evaluation. 
  • Secures, maintains and monitors materials, equipment and other resources belonging to the program area(s). Maintains cleanliness of program area(s). 
  • Participates in individual and groups supervision sessions; participates in professional development opportunities as appropriate. 
  • Implements goals, objectives, policies procedures and work standards for assigned programs. 
  • Exercises independent judgment and initiative within general policy guidelines. 
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. 
  • Works with staff on special events to carry out programs. 
  • Exercises authority in problems relating to members; utilizes guidance and discipline plan. 
  • May be required to drive Club van. 
  • Handles other duties and responsibilities as deemed necessary or important as assigned by the Unit Manager.

Minimum Requirements:
  • High school diploma or GED. 
  • Ability to motivate youth and handle behavior problems. 
  • Ability to deal with the general public. 
  • Ability to organize and supervise members in a safe environment. 
  • Ability to work with youth and families from a variety of backgrounds. 
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team. 
  • Flexibility to work clubhouse hours especially as seasons and service needs change. 

 Preferred Requirements:
  • 2-4 year degree in human services or related field 
  • Knowledge of youth development 
  • Administrative/Organizational Skills 
  • Experience developing and implementing programs, preferably in non-profit setting and /or programs for children/teens 
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written 
  • Group leadership skills, including an understanding of group dynamics 

Physical Demands: Demonstrated ability to: maintain a high energy level. Be comfortable performing multifaceted projects in conjunction with day to day services. May require being active for long periods of time; must be able to function under fast paced and noisy conditions; hear and understand speech at normal levels; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly; physical agility to push, pull, lift and or carry up to 50 pounds.
