More Nature Organizing Internship

Every minute, America is losing two football fields worth of forest, meadow, grassland, desert, beachfront, riverside or wetland. Today, just 13 percent of oceans worldwide can be classified as "wilderness" relatively unaffected by human activity.

This continuous loss of nature diminishes not only the richness of our natural world, but also of our own lives and that of our children’s future.

We have a better vision. We want more mountaintops where we can see nothing but forest below, more rivers that flow wild and free, more shoreline where all we can hear are waves. We want abundant wildlife in our world, from butterflies floating by to coyotes howling at night to whale tails breaching the surface just visible from shore.

It’s not too late. Protecting 30 percent of our lands and oceans by 2030 is an ambitious, but attainable goal, if we start now and take it step by step.

Location
To keep our staff, our interns and volunteers, and the people we are organizing safe, Environment America is currently conducting most campaign work remotely with some optional outdoor in-person work. Interns can be based anywhere but must have access to a reliable internet connection, a working web camera, and be available during normal business hours several days a week.

Internship Responsibilities
Interns will complete a minimum of 120 hours of training and volunteer work between August and December 2021. We offer three types of internships. Interns will be selected for the internship that best fits their interests and skills

  • Events coordinators will organize online events to educate the public about endangered species, areas in need of protection, and other topics related to the importance of conservation and public lands. Coordinators will recruit event co-sponsors and speakers, plan and execute a recruitment and marketing plan, and coordinate content.
  • Grassroots action coordinators will recruit and train volunteers to make phone calls, collect photo petitions, write letters, and run action trainings to hit the goals
  • Digital coordinators will create marketing materials to use on instagram, facebook, twitter, and other platforms to promote our events and our campaign message.

All interns will attend weekly (remote) training sessions to learn advocacy and activist skills. Interns will also attend weekly team meetings and will be responsible for writing a short report each week on their accomplishments.

Qualifications
Candidates must have completed at least one year of college. Successful interns will have a strong commitment to environmental issues, strong communication skills, leadership experience, and a proven ability to work independently and meet deadlines.

Application
Internships with Environment America are unpaid. We will work with interns to coordinate with their universities to meet requirements for course credit.

Apply online. Applications will be reviewed and hiring decisions will be made on a rolling basis. For more information, send an email to Sammy Herdman (sherdman@environmentamerica.org
