Big Hole National Battlefield

Join a small team of dedicated park employees working to help students remember the events surrounding the Nez Perce Flight of 1877, and the lasting effects on society today. Focus will be on creating, updating, and providing educational curriculum for Coyote Camp, visiting schools and potentially outreach to local rural schools.  Seeking someone who either has or is pursuing a degree in education or similar field, with a solid understanding of the Indian Education for All initiative and state/national curriculum standards. In addition to developing educational curriculum, the intern will also receive training in formal and informal interpretation, become familiar with operations at a visitor center in a small national park, and gain knowledge on a variety of topics and issues regarding Nez Perce history and present-day culture.

Duties will vary. Initially the intern will assist and provide programming for our annual Coyote Camp, utilizing the knowledge gained to update programming for the following year. During peak visitation season the incumbent’s primary responsibilities will be working the front desk at the visitor center and continuing to develop curriculum for educational groups. At the visitor center the intern will greet and orient visitors, answer questions, provide information and materials, and assist with stocking and sales of items in our partnering Glacier National Park Conservancy bookstore. Other duties may include introducing the park film, assisting with social media content, roving park trails and if interested, providing formal interpretive programs. 

During the slower winter months, the intern will still be responsible for working the front desk at the visitor center, but there will be additional time available to revise and formalize educational curriculum, so they meet the state required Indian Education for All initiative and other state and national standards. 

The park is considered remote and isolated. There are only 4 permanent staff members fewer than 10 summer seasonal staff. The ideal candidate will be comfortable living alongside the few people s/he works with. In the winter months, the intern will be the park’s only intern or seasonal staff member, thus must be comfortable living in a remote location with harsh winters.

Compensation amounts:

- $1,100- one time RT travel allowance

- $200- weekly living allowance

- Housing Provided

Big Hole National Battlefield consists of 600 acres located in the Big Hole Valley in southwestern Montana, which is home to large working ranches. It is nestled between three separate mountain ranges in the Beaverhead National Forest and has the North Fork of the Big Hole River running through it. Cell phone coverage is spotty, and is not available to some carriers in this area. The nearest town providing basic amenities is Wisdom, which is located 10 miles east of the park with a population of 98 people. Several towns with full services are located within 65 to 85 miles of the battlefield. A personal vehicle is required in order to access recreational and shopping opportunities. Be aware, the park will not provide a vehicle or bicycle for personal use.
