Molecular Research Internship
The U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine (USAFSAM) is offering an internship with the Applied Technology and Genomics Division, a molecular genetics laboratory located at USAFSAM.
What will I be doing?
As an ORISE participant, you will gain experience in a variety of research projects that utilize molecular based techniques to understand the public health impact of infectious diseases on military populations. These molecular techniques can range from simple PCR amplifications to genomic sequencing approaches.

- Gaining experience in any facet of the generation, collection, analysis, and interpretation of research data.
- Learning to troubleshoot and aid in experimental design.
- Participating in weekly team/mentor meetings and presenting data to various team members with an emphasis on understanding and conveying complex techniques and/or interpretations in a clear and concise manner.
- Performing scientific literature searches, identification, and retrieval and to synthesize their findings into meaningful conclusions.
- Potential to participate in the preparation of manuscripts, reports, and presentations including editing and formatting documents that originate from the projects.

What is the anticipated start date?
Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.
What is the appointment length?
This appointment is a 12-month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.
What are the benefits?
You will receive a stipend to be determined by USAFSAM. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

The 711th Human Performance Wing (711 HPW) is a unique combination of two units: the Airman Systems Directorate (RH) and the U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine (USAFSAM). About ORISE
This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Qualifications
The qualified candidate should currently be pursuing, or have received within the last 12 months, a bachelor's or master's degree in a microbiology, molecular biology, or similar degree from an accredited institution.
Highly competitive applicants will have education and/or experience in one or more of the following:
- Hands on experience in molecular techniques, particularly in the analysis of sequencing data.
- Skill in statistical interpretation and data analysis using statistical software (e.g. Python, R, Tableau) and/or spreadsheets and database software applications.
- Ability to understand and utilize scientific/medical terminology in both oral and written communications.
- Ability to independently complete and prioritize research activities in a time efficient manner when not directly interacting with mentor.
- Above all, the applicant should be prepared to be creative, problem solve, and think critically and carefully.
