R&D Systems Engineering (Early Career)

We are seeking a highly motivated Systems Engineer to join the NM Weapons Systems Engineering Center. The New Mexico Weapon Systems Engineering Center manages modernization for multiple nuclear weapon systems. The Center leads the Laboratories’ New Mexico efforts to develop integrated engineering solutions that maintain weapon system required military effectiveness and reliability while seeking improvements in safety and security. The Center provides systems engineering, integration, qualification, and product realization expertise for nuclear weapon system modernization programs from concept development through initial operating capability. This organization’s current focus is to deliver on time and within budget the B61-12 LEP, W88 ALT 370/940, Mk21 Arming and Fuzing Assembly, W80-4 and the W87-1.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
  • Resolve technical and programmatic design, development, qualification and production challenges in a collaborative manner with multiple internal and external agencies.
  • Demonstrate technical leadership in identifying and managing technical risks.
  • Analyze system performance against requirements.
  • Support the completion of functional and interface component requirements.
  • Update design definition and documentation.
  • Assess, plan, and report progress relative to program plan.
  • Work with systems engineers from multiple Sandia National Labs (SNL), Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC), Pantex (PX), National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), Navy, Air Force, Lockheed Martin, Lawrence Livermore National Labs (LANL) and Los Alamos National Labs (LANL) organizations to solve technical problems.

Qualifications We Require

  • Bachelor and Master of Science in a STEM degree from ABET accredited program, plus at least (5) years of relevant experience.
  • Ability to obtain DOE Q-level security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Demonstrated effective communication and collaboration skills.
  • Desire and ability to work with urgency and communicate challenging issues with dynamic conditions, competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate, build and work effectively across technical teams, to resolve issues and conduct trade-offs to identify system solutions.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and implementing system engineering processes.
  • Demonstrated experience effectively networking and partnering with organizations both inside and external to Sandia.
  • Ability to represent Sandia to external customers. Experience with DOD or DOE programs.
  • Active US DOE Q-level or DOD Top Secret clearance.
  • Experience in a nuclear weapon system or component organization.

The NM Weapon Systems Engineering Center performs systems engineering and systems management for the stewardship of New Mexico developed nuclear weapons and associated nuclear weapon capabilities. Ensuring the safety, security, and reliability of weapons throughout their life cycle and the development and maintenance of competency through advanced development of new technologies are an essential part of Center activities.

Position Information

This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years.
Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.

Security Clearance

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
