350 Madison Community Climate Solutions Internship

We are seeking energetic interns to join our growing organization. In this position, you will learn the nuts and bolts of how the City of Madison is navigating the logistical, policy and leadership challenges of moving from 20th Century energy use practices toward net-zero 21st Century practices. You will work with three of the project groups of our City of Madison Community Working Group (CWG): the Plan Commission Climate Corps (PC3), the Transportation Group, and the Benchmarking Group. The goals of the CWG are to help the City of Madison achieve its stated climate goals by bringing to bear the power of climate-concerned citizens. Roles will include, but not be limited to: conducting research on strategies used by cutting edge sustainability cities; participating as a member of project groups, and helping with organizational logistics.
Intern Duties and Responsibilities 
Conduct research on specified topics
  • Data gathering techniques will include web-searches, reading reports of national, regional, and local sustainability organizations, and conducting interviews with key stakeholders in the Madison community and beyond.
  • Summarizing and presenting research for Project Group volunteers and city officials
  • Examples of research topics are:
  • Helping project members develop research-based sustainability checklists for use by City commissions that approve proposals for new buildings and emissions-reducing changes in transportation. 
  • Finding and systematically describing cutting edge “retro-commissioning” and other green building strategies used by other cities.
  • Other topics to be identified as our groups rapidly evolve.
 
Participate as a member of project groups 
  • Prepare for and attend Plan Commission Climate Corps, Transportation Group, and Benchmarking project group meetings 
  • Help these group prepare memos to city officials, and engage in other advocacy efforts
  • Write sustainability-focused comments to members of city commissions and committees.
 
Help produce a CWG podcast or blog series focused on sustainability (specifically Greenhouse Gas emissions) in the City of Madison. 
 
Help with organizational logistics
  • Help manage our shared Google Drive
  • Prepare meeting minutes or reports as requested
  • Help with CCST database management.
 
Other duties as assigned. 
 
Intern Requirements and Qualifications
·       High school degree or equivalent - ideally enrolled in a college degree program
·       Proficient computer skills, including Google Suite and Zoom
·       Has, or is Interested in developing, good organizational skills
·       Strong written and verbal communication skills - journalism experience a strong asset 
·       Self-directed and able to work independently and remotely
·       Energetic and eager to tackle new projects and ideas
·       Must be available to work 10 hours per week
·       Must provide own computer, phone and access to Internet
·       Must be able to work evenings and weekends as needed.
