Spring/Summer Intern, GIS Graduate Student, Remote

The Field Museum seeks a GIS Graduate Student Intern (or an applicant with equivalent skills) with a passion for environmental conservation and moderate to advanced GIS software skills. The successful applicant will be supervised by a GIS Analyst and will teleconference regularly with a mapping advisory team, as well as attend virtual meetings both with Field Museum staff and the Chicago Wilderness community. All GIS work will be conducted remotely through the spring and into the summer. Opportunities will exist for presenting aspects of our work at project meetings.
The GIS Graduate Student Intern will be part of the Conservation Tools program in the Keller Science Action Center, an interdisciplinary team committed to developing tools and decision support systems for environmental conservation and improved quality of life. One of the main initiatives of the team is to develop a data repository and tracking system for our partner organization, Chicago Wilderness, and the environmental community it serves. This position will support this new system in a variety of ways including communicating with stakeholders, attending and presenting at meetings, acquiring and developing data layers, and performing some GIS analyses.
Ideal candidates will pay careful attention to details, work well with others, and complete their work effectively.
This paid internship is part-time (20-25 hours/week) for a period of approximately 3 months starting in the Spring and extending into the summer. Responsibilities:
  • Acquisition of data layers and creation of metadata to populate a public GIS repository
  • Communicate directly with organizations, individuals, and teams to obtain data and information related to project goals
  • Participate in mapping design team meetings with GIS professionals
  • Participate in stakeholder meetings including presenting the project design and gathering information about stakeholder needs
  • Perform GIS analyses with large datasets
  • General support for GIS users and other staff as needed
Skills and Qualifications:
  • Applicant must have an Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, or Michigan address to be considered
  • Experience working with ArcGIS Pro, ArcMap 10.x, and ArcGIS Online
  • Experience working with large geospatial datasets and Spatial Analyst tools
  • Experience working with groups and teams a plus
  • Experience working through geospatial problems
  • Communication skills (writing and presenting)
  • Ideal candidates include current or recent graduate students, or may have a bachelor’s degree in geography, anthropology, ecology, or biology, along with a few years of work experience in GIS or environmental issues
