Spring/Summer Intern, GIS Undergraduate Student

The Field Museum seeks a current or recent undergraduate GIS student intern (or an applicant with equivalent skills) with a passion for environmental conservation and GIS software skills. The successful applicant will be supervised by a GIS Specialist and will attend virtual meetings with Field Museum staff. All GIS work will be conducted remotely through the spring and into the summer. 
The GIS Undergraduate Student Intern will be part of the Conservation Tools program in the Keller Science Action Center, an interdisciplinary team committed to developing tools and decision support systems for environmental conservation and improved quality of life. This position will assist the Tools team with GIS data management, production of maps, data analysis, and other support as needed.
This paid internship is part-time (20-25 hours/week) for a period of approximately 3 months starting in the Spring and extending into the summer. Responsibilities:
  • Acquisition, creation, and organization of spatial datasets
  • Generation of maps to support our work in the Chicago Region
  • Creation of map templates in collaboration with GIS staff
  • General support for GIS users and other staff as assigned
Skills and Qualifications:
  • Applicant must have an Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, or Michigan address to be considered
  • Experience working with ArcGIS Pro, ArcMap 10.x, and ArcGIS Online
  • Experience working with large geospatial datasets and map design
  • Experience working in groups or with teams
  • Attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Working toward or recently completed an undergraduate degree in GIS, geography, ecology, biology, environmental science, or related field and/or experience in environmental conservation
