Salary: $26.27 - $31.36 per hour, depending on experience. Plus $1.50 night/$1.50 weekend differential and potential for overtime.

Join the field of Correctional Nursing at the Mike Durfee State Prison! We have a full-time position that works three 12-hour shifts per week. Correctional health nurses work autonomously to provide health care to an underserved population in a secure environment. Nurses are involved in diverse cares such as chronic care maintenance, acute cares, emergency response, behavioral health needs, long term and geriatric care, drug and alcohol withdrawal, infirmary care and hospice. These are provided in a clinic environment and also includes specialty cares via Tele-health. Nurses will have a set schedule and be included in a weekend and holiday rotation. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and climb up to five flights of stairs.

This position is exempt from the Civil Service Act.
Licenses and Certifications: 
Must be licensed or be eligible to be licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) in South Dakota.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Strong nursing assessment skill, critical thinking skills, initiative, team oriented, and communication skills.
Knowledge of:
  • the principles and techniques of patient care;
  • hospital and clinic routine and procedures;
  • IV therapy;
  • the care and use of medical equipment and supplies.
Ability to:
  • evaluate client behaviors, symptoms, and effects of medications;
  • follow directions;
  • prepare and maintain records, charts, and reports;
  • apply nursing techniques as delegated by physicians or registered nurses;
  • establish and maintain effective relationships with patients and staff;
  • direct and monitor direct care personnel.
