Middle School English Position


Title: Middle School English Teacher
Reports to: Director of Middle School

Position Summary:

The Miami Valley School is seeking an English teacher committed to developing critical and creative thinkers who collaborate and communicate effectively. This new faculty member will be joining a department that strives to represent the diversity of the MVS community through its text selections, offers assessments that provide a range of opportunities for self-expression, and integrates coursework with other academic departments and the world at large. The faculty member will teach 4 sections of 6th through 8th grade middle school English, contingent upon enrollment. In each of these roles, the new faculty member should be dedicated to developing curriculum that is literature-rich, writing-intensive, and culturally-inclusive. The literature curriculum should seek a balance between canonical and contemporary works of fiction and non-fiction. Writing instruction should place emphasis on argumentative, analytical, and research-based writing. 

This new faculty member will establish a supportive and engaging environment for middle school students (grades 6-8), demonstrate the ability to create developmentally appropriate and inclusive curricula, work collaboratively with colleagues and parents, possess excellent communication skills, and demonstrate a teaching proficiency and comfort with a variety of different teaching and learning styles. Additional duties include co-teaching and designing a 3-week immersive and interdisciplinary course, which may involve domestic travel. Ideal candidates will possess prior experience teaching English in middle and/or upper school settings, advising clubs, coaching athletics, and/or leading student travel learning programs. Candidates without prior teaching experience will also be considered.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Teach 4 sections of 6th through 8th grade middle school English, depending on enrollment
  • Lead/Co-lead an Immersion program in January
  • Develop and propose new courses each year, including new Immersion programs
  • Serve as an advisor for a group of 10-12 middle school students
  • Lead and/or advise extracurricular activities, which include student clubs and athletics

Qualifications:
  • Undergraduate or advanced degree(s) in English, English education, or other humanities degree
  • The desire to work with pre-teen and teenage students in an experiential setting
