The Permanent/Full Time Registered Nurse (Safety) will be directed by the Unit Supervisor, Senior Psychiatric Technician, RN Shift Lead or Health Services Specialist depending on the shift/program assigned. The incumbent will be responsible for the following duties but not limited to:

• Helps to create a clean, safe and therapeutic environment for patients or inmates; and supervise patient activities
• Performs nursing procedures such as administering medications including oral medications and hypodermic injection, observing and assessing patients or inmates physical condition and behavior and reporting significant changes to the shift lead or physician and recording nursing notes in the patients or inmate record; assessing and recording patient acuity ratings; determining Nursing Diagnosis and preparing Nursing Care Plans
• Performs shakedowns; i.e. searching for drugs, contraband, weapons and inspecting facilities to identify security breaches that could lead to the escape of a patient or inmate; observing and interviewing in patient behavior that may injure people, damage property or signal impending escape attempts, applies and demonstrates knowledge of correct methods in the prevention and management of assaultive behavior (PMAB), that includes patient containment, heavy lifting, applying restraints, and responding to emergency situations throughout the hospital

1. BE LIST ELIGIBLE: Successfully complete the competitive State civil service exam for Registered Nurse, Correctional Facility at www.cphcs.hodesiq.com/Apply_online_1.asp?sGoBackExam1=y&ClassCode=9275&ExamID=18&ExamTitle=Registered%20Nurse,%20Correctional%20Facility . Please note that you will be required to create a CCHCS account (in addition to your CalCareer account) to take the exam. Please contact our office to speak with a Recruitment Coordinator if you require assistance. [The DSH Registered Nurse (Safety) exam is not currently available and we are using the CCHCS eligibility list as a comparable classification], OR
2. BE TRANSFER ELIGIBLE: Have current employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable (employees who wish to be considered based on transfer eligibility must meet the minimum qualifications of the classification per DPA Rule 250), OR
3. BE REINSTATEMENT ELIGIBLE: Have obtained previous permanent employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Possession of the legal requirements to practice as a professional Registered Nurse in California.

Working Conditions

12 hour shifts and other alternate schedules may be available based on current staffing.
