Background
HeadWaters Land Conservancy (HWLC) is a nonprofit land trust that works to protect the natural diversity and beauty of northeast Michigan by preserving significant land and scenic areas and fostering appreciation and understanding of the environment. HWLC serves 11 counties in northeast Michigan (Alcona, Alpena, Arenac, Crawford, Iosco, Montmorency, Oscoda, Ogemaw, Otsego, Presque Isle, and Roscommon) from our office in downtown Gaylord. We hold 90 conservation easements and own 6 nature preserves, permanently protecting over 12,000 acres of land and 37 miles of shoreline.  
 
Position Description
HeadWaters Land Conservancy is seeking a full-time intern to help our organization with land stewardship and outreach events during the busy summer season. The Stewardship and Outreach Assistant will conduct site surveys and assist with trail maintenance at HWLC’ nature preserves, monitor conservation easement properties, create videos highlighting HWLC’s nature preserves and wildlife exhibit, represent HWLC at community events, help at our annual fundraising events, and other stewardship and outreach tasks both in and out of the office. The intern will plan, promote, and execute an outreach event at HeadWaters’ Sturgeon River Preserve. This internship is an opportunity to acquire hands-on experience in all aspects of a nonprofit land trust, especially stewardship and community engagement.

Qualifications:
-         Completed or working towards a bachelor’s degree in natural resources management, environmental science, nonprofit administration, communications, education, or related field
-         Basic navigation skills (Map, compass, GPS unit)
-         Basic knowledge of northern Michigan’s plants and animals
-         Outgoing and self-motivated with the ability to work independently or as a team
-         Communicate effectively with a wide variety of people, including kids and seniors
-         Computer efficiency, GIS skills preferred
-         Comfortable working alone in remote wooded areas
-         Reliable transportation and valid driver’s license preferred

Compensation
This is a 40 hour/week position that pays $10/hour. The internship will last 14 weeks, from mid-May to mid-August, actual start and end dates are negotiable. Typical hours are Monday – Friday, 9AM to 5PM, with some Saturdays for special events. This internship may be used for college credit as permitted by the school.
