  • Perform fire investigations to determine origins and causes and perform engineering analyses to determine if any breakdown in the fire protection plans and procedures may have occurred.
  • Perform fire hazard analyses for nuclear facilities in support of the Safety Basis and Documented Safety Analysis Rule processes.
  • Reviews and approves architectural and fire protection drawings, engineering calculations, and other design documents for new construction or modification of existing facilities.
  • Develops and implements fire prevention programs and procedures in an attempt to eliminate personnel injury and minimize property damage due to fire and explosion.
  • Develops inspection, testing, and maintenance requirements for fire protection systems.
  • Performs facility and life-safety evaluations to determine fire risk and provides effective and efficient engineered solutions to mitigate risk.
  • Performs and reviews hydraulic calculations for determining acceptable water supply design to meet fire suppression demands.
  • Build emergency services baseline needs assessment to detail the minimum services needed to support life safety and property protection.
  • Performs fire characterization analyses for a high volume of diverse chemical materials, enabling Research and Development organizations to maintain laboratory operations within the building safety basis envelope.
  • Researches issues in such areas as fluid mechanics, fire dynamics, chemistry, hydraulics, thermodynamics, control systems, chemical kinematics, and heat transfer for metals, plastics, composite, and other structural building materials.
  • Applies research to the design, development, construction, installation, and decommissioning of electrical, mechanical, civil, structural, and architectural elements.
  • Analyzes the ability of building systems and components to withstand stresses imposed by conditions such as temperature, seismic, and other natural phenomenon hazards and performs analysis of system operation to design requirements.

Qualifications We Require

  • Bachelor's degree in Fire Protection Engineering/Technology; or Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., Mechanical, Electrical, Civil Engineering, etc.); or equivalent combination of relevant education and related experience.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Master's in Fire Protection Engineering or Technology.
  • Understanding of applicable federal laws, regulations, building/fire codes, Executive orders, and DOE Orders related to fire protection and highly protected risk concepts.

  • Experience using and interpreting the IBC and its referenced codes/standards (e.g.,NFPA) applicable to a diverse set of operations that include hazardous, industrial, business, assembly, and storage occupancies.
  • Knowledge of the NFPA requirements associated with inspection, testing and maintenance of fire protection systems.

About Our Team

The Building & Fire Safety Department provides for protection of workers, the public, the environment, and property from fire and its related hazards. We apply integrated technical judgment, requiring the use of the scientific method to recognize problems, collect data through observation and research, and to engineer, innovate, and deliver fire protection solutions, enabling Sandia National Laboratories to accomplish its missions, while protecting workers, the public, the environment, and key national assets. We apply knowledge in the fundamentals of science and engineering, while demonstrating a deep understanding of engineering and scientific principles in a risk-informed, performance-based arena. Our team creates unique solutions by applying scientific and engineering methods to prevent and mitigate fire and life safety hazards in a highly regulated environment, including nuclear, accelerator, explosive, flammable liquids and solids, semi-conductor research, and test and manufacturing facilities. We see computational fire dynamic modeling simulation and analysis to evaluate and develop performance-based solutions in areas not addressed by the prescriptive industry consensus codes.

Security Clearance

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
