The Office of Road Design is currently recruiting for a Land Surveyor-in-Training. Incumbents in this position will work under the supervision of a Professional Land Surveyor meeting prerequisites for licensure as a Professional Land Surveyor.
This position is an office work setting only. Opportunities for field survey experience will be limited and are not a regular function of this position.
Incumbents in this position will have the opportunity to work on a wide variety of projects in both rural and urban settings. Projects regularly impact private land and often impact federal and state lands and navigable waterways; all for which, the Office of Road Design is responsible for drafting appropriate platting.
Examples of duties include, but are not limited to reviewing plats for conformance to the principles and practices of the surveying profession as well as to Department standards; reviewing Right-of-Way plans and Construction plans for conformance to Department standards and quality of information between plats, Right of Way plans and Construction plans; providing guidance to other staff regarding boundary surveying, and drafting of legal descriptions.
Licenses and Certifications:
Must be certified as a Land Surveyor in Training (LSIT) according to the guidelines of the South Dakota Board of Technical Professions.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Applicants with experience in boundary surveying are preferred.
Knowledge of:
  • principles, theories, and practices of boundary surveying;
  • various public land record keeping systems;
  • principles, theories, and practices of highway or road engineering (preferred but not required);
  • MicroStation and Inroads applications (preferred but not required);
  • Trimble Business Center software (preferred but not required);
  • Trimble GNSS and robotic total station equipment (preferred but not required).
Skill to:
  • to use a computer and operate Microsoft software;
  • to use surveying software and hardware (Trimble products) used by the Department;
  • to think independently and solve problems, individually or as a team.
Ability to:
  • display high standards of ethical conduct;
  • adjust effectively to changing, new, or different situations at work;
  • work cooperatively with others and promote a friendly work climate in order to achieve shared goals;
  • display a high level of effort and commitment towards completing assignments and goals properly, accurately and thoroughly;

  • set priorities, schedule activities, acquire resources, and monitor progress to ensure the successful completion of projects and assignments;
  • understand the application of statutes and document and defend decisions made;
  • search through the public record for written evidence of ownership of property of property descriptions contained in prior documents.
