Chemical Engineering / Materials Development Internship

Summary: 
The Cooper Standard Materials Development Team in Livonia, MI has an exciting chance for an Intern to provide support for the Summer 2021 Program. This position will provide you with the opportunity to understand and support the Automotive product group side of Cooper Standard and their Materials Development and gain hands on experience with Chemical Engineering technology. If selected, you will assist in advanced analyses, tests, and development of new or updated formulas that require specialized understanding of chemistry, product lines, and materials. You will work with Chemists and Lab Technicians as well as Production Personnel to implement new and revise materials.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  

  • Enters new materials and revisions into the appropriate Product Management System  
  • Develops working knowledge of business group operations and application methods to assist with implementing project objectives, product systems, budgets, timelines, and other requirements   
  • Assists in book-shelving material technology for future use of Engineering and Operations  
  • Responds to moderate level questions and concerns from plants, research technicians, quality control, customers and other internal and external parties regarding development, applications, quality assurance, and related programs and services  
  • Analyzes reports and documents detailing project processes, results, conclusions, and analysis of failed current production materials; recommends additional actions or research to advanced Chemists 
  • Learns and applies department policies, procedures, applicable rules, and regulations; ensures compliance within these areas 
  • Accountable for developing technical contributions  
  • Uses existing procedures to solve standard problems; analyzes information and standard practices to make judgement  
  • Assists in benchmarking of competitive materials/products  
  • Validates new materials and generates new validation methods as required with guidance from others 
  • Interprets development of materials best practices and generation of materials specifications 
  • Serves as a team member for projects that are small to moderate in nature and independently carries out project tasks and provides professional technical support to the product development, quality control, manufacturing processes, and other operations 
  • Operates, maintains, and calibrates a variety of specialized equipment that require professional judgment and background; also utilizes technical or standard equipment during the course of projects 
  • Assists with smaller or less complex projects to ensure daily tasks and project objectives are completed 
  • Contributes to various scrap, lean, and variation reduction projects 
  • Receives instruction, guidance, and direction from others 
  • Maintains awareness of the latest developments within the industry and professional field by meeting with people of similar capacities, reading industry and technical literature and attending industry trade group meetings  
  • Must be willing to work overtime as needed 
 
Requirements: 

  • Must have met the credit requirements to achieve Senior level student status prior to May 2021, pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Material Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field 
  • Must have a minimum 3.0 G.P.A.  
  • Excellent Interpersonal skills 
  • Self-motivated 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Applications 
  • Lab Experience from College or previous internship
  • Excellent presentation skills 
  • Strong knowledge, skills, and abilities in the following areas: 
  • Problem solving and decision making 
  • Problem identification 
  • Computer and electronics skills 
  • Ability to organize, plan, and complete multiple tasks 
  • Possess excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills 
 
Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Critical Thinking: Using logic and reason to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems 
  • Minimum G.P.A. of 3.4 is preferred 
  • Proficient in Excel is preferred 

Work Environment/Conditions: 

  • Professional Office and Lab Environment 
  • Must wear proper PPE while on manufacturing floor 
  • Travel to manufacturing facilities or customer locations when needed
