Postdoctoral Associate


A bout the Job:
This position requires the organization and execution of all laboratory research relating to chronic myocardial ischemia in the lab of Dr. Rosemary Kelly. In short, responsibilities include development of new research ideas and carrying out experimentation, assisting with administrative matters such as grant writing, development of protocols, preparation for inspections, and maintaining laboratory space. In addition, data analysis, manuscript writing, and presentation of research at national meetings are also required.

Duties/Responsibilities:
1. Performing and directing research experiments related to myocardial ischemia-reperfusion in an in vitro model. In addition, handling tissue samples related to an in vivo swine model of chronic myocardial ischemia including mitochondrial, blood flow, and stem cell studies, coordinating studies involving all aspects of experiments from imaging to cellular. Maintenance of experimental records and laboratory work areas, as well as compiling and analyzing the outcome measures of all experiments is a primary responsibility.
2. Assisting in large animal work, including surgical and imaging studies. This includes in preparation of pre- and intra-operative anesthesia and other medications, and record keeping. Also, preparation and organization of tissue harvest and collection is required.
3. Compiling research data and writing abstracts, posters, and manuscripts for publication. This includes presenting accepted data at scientific meetings, editing manuscripts following peer review, and preparation of grant applications.
4. Running a weekly Journal Club meeting with research collaborators to discuss new research ideas and directions.
5. Correspondence with the Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee (IACUC), including submitting applications for new research projects; renewing applications for existing and ongoing studies; drafting and submitting amendments for any changes in protocol; and terminating any completed projects.
6. Assisting in the maintenance of a research budget in regards to laboratory supplies, animal costs, and contracts for research related services.

Qualifications


R equired Qualifications:
1. PhD in a biomedical field
2. Experience in molecular biology research involving primary cell cultures and in vitro models of disease.
3. Knowledge of standard laboratory techniques (western blot, ELISA, tissue culture, microscopy, sample preparation of protein, DNA, RNA from tissues)
4. Experience in writing peer reviewed publications and presenting scientific findings
5. Ability to connect and communicate well within a team environment

P referred Qualifications:
1. Experience with in vitro research models and translational research
2. Experience with developing and validating new methods/protocols
3. Knowledge of cardiac physiology and myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury
4. Experience with grant writing and submission
5. Biostatistics experience
