Position Details
Stewards Individual Placement Program (SIPP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.

SIPP, in partnership with the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE), is seeking a year-long AmeriCorps member who has the will to work extensively with existing GIS systems to locate and log existing project and investigation reports conducted by the Technical Support Division (TSD) personnel over the past several decades. The project will encompass the broad spectrum of projects that are conducted by TSD personnel including but not limited to: hydrologic investigations (e.g., acid mine drainage from surface and underground mines, stream dewatering, well/aquifer dewatering, surface and mine flooding, overall surface and underground mine hydrologic characterizations), landslides, mine subsidence, fugitive mine gas (methane, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, etc.) problems and other mining-related issues. Through the process of electronically classifying these projects, the incumbent will have the opportunity to read and understand all aspects of the work, thus becoming well acquainted with the technical support work.

The incumbent will electronically capture as many of the existing backlogged project reports as possible. Quality assurance and control will be performed to confirm that each project is as accurately located and linked to the correct supporting documentation. The ultimate goal is to have a GIS database with integrated information and date completed for all of the known TSD completed projects.
