Riveredge Outdoor Learning Elementary School Teacher

The vision of ROLES is to create an environment where students are connected to the outdoors every day. The school will accomplish this through the mission to serve as a laboratory for outdoor learning which amplifies the outcomes of public education, serves learners of all abilities and needs, fosters a deep connection to the environment, and prepares students for success in school and life. ROLES will provide rich, diverse, and authentic learning experiences for students in K-5th grade through a nature-based, inquiry-based, and community-based learning environment.

The ROLES Teacher is part of a small team of this teacher-led elementary charter school and will be primarily responsible to guide students through the learning process and facilitate new learning by which academic work and our core values of curiosity, adventure, and community are infused. Through their daily work with students, families, and colleagues they embody the mission of the school.

The ROLES Teacher is passionate about learning, their students, and innovative teaching in the outdoors. The individual in this position will be a creative, flexible, spontaneous, risk taker who possesses the ability to excel in unstructured environments. This position will be collaborative in student-centered, nature-based education and be comfortable outdoors in all kinds of weather. In addition, a deep understanding of inquiry-based learning philosophy and child development principles are critical components of success.

The ROLES Teacher will work closely with the ROLES Administrator, teaching staff, and the administrative assistant to create a school community that reflects the vision of the Riveredge School. This is an elementary teaching position. Class sizes at ROLES are 16-18 students each.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Serve as a member of the teaching team.
• Perform all aspects of classroom management, preparation, and implementation of current teaching strategies.
• Organize and participate in special activities for students.
• Design, deliver, and assess nature-based, inquiry-based, and community-based learning; effectively integrate content standards.
• Develop and implement appropriate and functional IEP goals and objectives with IEP team.
• Collect IEP data on a regular basis.
• Participate in regular staff meetings.
• Attend appropriate conferences, workshops, and in-services including the Summer Institute professional development for school staff (Summer 2020); participate in appropriate professional development as required by the DPI.
• Communicate with parents using a variety of methods as needed.
• Guide placement procedures and participate in placement meetings, as assigned, for newly referred students.
• Assist in planning and delivering community open-house events and information nights.
• Participate in selecting and ordering equipment, classroom supplies, and other materials for ROLES.
• Other duties as assigned.

Experience, Education and Licensure:
• Solid educational background including a Bachelor’s degree in education.
• A current and appropriate Teaching License issued by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.
• Evidence of competencies in classroom management, learning strategies, individual and group management, curriculum development, and program evaluation.

• Demonstrate a strong desire to collaborate in nature-based learning, student-centered education, and the ability to make school look a lot less like school.
• Experience in outdoor education is highly desired.
• Enthusiastic, positive, motivated and likes to have fun on the job.
• Strong belief that an inclusive, nature-based learning environment offers a more productive and personalized way of educating all students.
• Ability to deliver instruction incorporating workshops, immersion, field experience, and traditional delivery to ensure that all individual student needs are met in accordance with preferred mode of instruction.
• Proven leadership skills and the ability to work effectively with groups and individuals.
• Demonstrate skill in organizing ideas and presenting them with clarity and conciseness.
• Creative and imaginative approach to problem-solving and demonstrated ability to think outside of the box.
• Experience integrating technology into instruction.
• Self-starter and a well-developed ability to set and meet goals and outcomes.
• Exhibit a high degree of confidentiality of sensitive information and process, and handle confidential information with discretion.
• Computer skills: internet, email, social media; Microsoft Word, Excel, PP; Google Docs, Drive , Calendar; ability to participate in virtual meetings.
• Naturalistic skills and knowledge of WI natural history.

This position must be able to physically traverse the Riveredge trails with ease.
