Post-Doctoral Thermal and Mountain Researcher

The U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM) is an internationally recognized military laboratory located in Natick, Massachusetts, with the overreaching research goal of maximizing and optimizing Warfighter health and performance. USARIEM's research consists of four divisions: military performance, military nutrition, thermal and mountain medicine, and biophysics and biomedical modeling. Our research studies are conducted by scientists from our four research divisions, working in concert with one another, as well as other world-class scientists from government, industry, and academia.
The Thermal and Mountain Medicine Division (TMMD) is offering a post-doctoral research opportunity. As an ORISE participant, you will take part in ongoing and upcoming research studies regarding human, physical, and cognitive performance in extreme environments. Under the guidance of a mentor, you will participate in multidisciplinary human subject research teams to identify novel prevention strategies that will mitigate the impact of environmental and occupational stressors.
During your appointment, you will learn about and aid with the conception, planning, development, and conduct of basic applied human research in the laboratory or field. This learning experience will also include opportunities to publish original research findings in high impact physiology journals, and present posters or oral presentations at national or international scientific meetings.
Appointment Length
This appointment is a twelve month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.
Participant Benefits
Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by USAMRMC-RIEM. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment
The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
