Project Background: The Telling All Americans' Stories-Delaware Project addresses critical NPS needs for two projects in the state of Delaware for gaps in African American history in the National Historic Landmark (NHL) Program.
Project Goals: For the site identification project, along with a traditional annotated list, the participant will share the findings through a brown-bag webinar presentation hosted by the region, and they can also propose other presentation methods, including Storymaps. For the NHL nomination update, the results will be a thoroughly-researched, well written statement of significance that can be shared with partners, as well as a brief brown bag webinar on the findings hosted by the region. The participant can suggest additional public locations for public presentations as well.
Position Description: One project will build on existing research responding to a legislative requirement that the NPS identify properties potentially eligible as NHLs in Delaware by expanding the findings for sites associated with historic African American and Native American communities. The research will require evaluation of national significance and integrity as well as research in a state-wide geographic scope and across multiple historical themes. The deliverable will be an annotated identification list that will be presented to regional management, park units, and state-wide partners for identification of properties recommended for NHL nomination. The second project will implement the next phase of a region-wide plantation survey to update plantation NHL documentation with the history of enslavement for a property in Delaware. The deliverable will be a draft significance statement for an updated NHL nomination that will be incorporated into a full draft. Both projects will require self-directed research and highly-organized interns interested in coordinating NPS projects with interdisciplinary regional cultural resource staff, park staff, NPS partners, and communities. In addition, the intern will craft social media posts that highlight these stories as smaller, weekly deliverables.
