The South Dakota Department of the Military is seeking an experienced Accountant to join our Finance team. You can expect to perform professional level accounting and audit work that requires analysis and judgment. Employees in this role are responsible for the financial data, projects and/or audits of the Air Guard. You will have the opportunity to work independently as well as in a team environment.
As an Accountant for the Department of the Military, you will have the opportunity to:
  • collect, assemble, prepare, examine and analyze accounting records and transactions, financial statements and other financial reports;
  • contribute to the timely and accurate completion of the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) for the department, working with and at the direction of the Department’s Finance Director;
  • prepare, process and review annual budget for the Air Guard;
  • maintain financial security and strengthen financial internal controls through continuous process and procedure evaluations and recommend changes; 
  • develop rapport, collaborate and communicate openly and effectively with co-workers and agency staff to create an environment of trust that facilitates the achievement of our goals and objectives.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have: 
Graduation from an accredited university or college with a four year bachelor's degree in accounting is preferable; however, a degree in business administration, finance, economics, or management will be considered.
Knowledge of:
  • Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP);
  • Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB), knowledge of pronouncements and standards/guidance related to governmental accounting and financial reporting;
  • emphasis in governmental accounting for work in preparing and completing portions of the state's Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR);
  • SD Accounting System (SDAS) or various other financial systems;
  • credit card practices and billing mechanisms.

  • prepare, analyze and interpret complex accounting transactions and financial reports.
  • use computers, applicable accounting systems/software, and various other management information systems;
  • prioritize and complete work by established deadlines.
