DoD Health Sciences Summer Internship

The US Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM) is an internationally recognized center of excellence for Warfighter health and performance science located in Natick, Massachusetts. USARIEM functions as a world-class laboratory for research related to environmental medicine, biophysics and biomedical modeling, military performance, thermal physiology, physiology, and nutrition.
USARIEM is offering an undergraduate learning opportunity. The learning opportunity will be centered around research studies focused on elite female Warfighter performance and military load carriage. These studies seek to characterize female Warfighters serving in combat roles as well as develop new methods for predicting energy expenditure and fatigue in active Soldiers. As a participant, you will take part in the collection and organization of ongoing and upcoming research.
Throughout your appointment you will gain valuable knowledge and experience in the following areas:
  1. Conducting searches of scientific literature;
  2. Collection and processing of research data;
  3. Setting up equipment for research experiments;
  4. Writing and editing of research reports; and
  5. Understanding experimental research in a federal government research laboratory.  
Appointment Length
An ORISE appointment period can be a short-term (less than 2 weeks), summer (10-12 weeks), or year-long appointment. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant. Desired Appointment Start Date: 6/1/2020.
Participant Benefits
Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by USARIEM. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

  • Relocation Allowance
  • Training and Travel Allowance
Nature of Appointment
The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
