Cardiovascular and Thermal Human Physiology Research

This opportunity takes place at the Navy Experimental Diving Unit (NEDU) in Panama City, Florida. NEDU's mission is to conduct manned, unmanned, and biomedical research; develop, test, and evaluate diving, hyperbaric, life support, and submersible systems and procedures; and ensure all diving equipment and procedures meet the safety standards and operational requirements to expand the U.S. Navy’s advantage during any undersea military operation. NEDU is equipped with the United State's largest research hyperbaric chamber complex for wet and dry hyperbaric/diving operations, a 55,000 gallon test pool, and state-of-the-art physiological research facilities.

The prospective candidate will conduct a review of literature and data in NEDU’s possession to support delivery of thermal protection guidance for military diving missions. The guidance will be consist of a Diver Thermal Matrix based upon immersion in various water temperatures and mission-relevant garments.
The candidate will:
  • Compile all thermal relevant documentation and data records in NEDU’s possession; 
  • Collect and analyze data using statistical and graphing software; 
  • Support processes to obtain required project materials including research of supplies and equipment, development of documentation for review and approval by the Principal Investigator and Fiscal Office, and maintenance of purchasing logs; 
  • Develop technical documentation, abstracts, journal articles, and presentations, prepare and assist publication of a scientific manuscript under the direction of the Principal Investigators. 
The candidate will review records to extract information pertaining to any and all of the following parameters: 1) water temperature, 2) dive duration, 3) depth, 4) garment ensemble/insulation value, 5) dive rig/breathing apparatus, 6) breathing gas, 7) activity level, 8) active heat (if provided), and 9) any other parameters found to affect thermal decision-making.  
The candidate will perform appropriate statistical analysis and develop a set of tables and decision tree algorithms in a format mutually determined by NEDU and relevant stakeholders. Gaps will be identified for future prioritization of unmanned and manned thermal testing.  
The candidate's contribution to ongoing research activities may include: Support of the undersea missions in evaluation of water temperature and diving garments for operational use in the maritime environment. This literature review will result in guidance for operational thermal equipment decision making, as well as needs for cold and warm-water operations. Results will be valuable to all branches of the military.
Appointment Length
This appointment is a twelve month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.
Participant Benefits
Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by NEDU. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment
The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
