FDA Postgraduate Research Opportunity in Infectious Diseases

A research opportunity is currently available with the Office of Vaccines Research and Review (OVRR), at the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER), Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in Silver Spring, Maryland.
Next-generation pertussis vaccine are needed that reduce colonization of the airway. This research opportunity will support efforts on projects with the goal of developing functional antibody assays for evaluating pertussis infection and vaccination. These assays are required to better understand the mechanism of vaccine-mediated protection from pertussis. Samples collected from non-human primates vaccinated with experimental vaccine will be tested and results will be correlated with the ability of those vaccines to prevent infection. Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will be trained in and will contribute to experimental design and execution, data analysis, and preparation of publications and presentations for associated projects. The participant's daily activities will be supervised by the principal investigator and experienced staff scientists in the laboratory.
Anticipated Appointment Start Date: June 15, 2020
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and FDA. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of FDA contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at FDA in the Silver Spring, Maryland, area. Participants do not become employees of FDA, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
Qualifications
The qualified candidate should have received a bachelor's degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing the degree and will reach completion by the appointment start date. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
