Opportunity Council - Maple Alley Inn Summer VISTA

Are you passionate about growing and making food? Join our team this summer and help ensure that our community's most vulnerable have access to healthy nutritious food.

Maple Alley is a program of Opportunity Council in Bellingham, WA serving three meals each week (one and breakfast and two lunches) to anyone who is hungry. Unlike many hot meal programs, Maple Alley places a special emphasis on providing nutrient-dense, balanced meals low in salt, sugar, and fat. All meals are made from scratch and when possible are filled with produce grown from our community garden. In addition to providing a meal, Maple Alley serves as an outreach hub for a variety of service providers including physical and mental health providers food benefit and health insurance enrollment, and is a common stop-over for our homeless outreach team, just to name a few. Maple Alley is more than just a meal, it is a place for people to gather to build relationships and share food together.

Your time will be split each week between the kitchen and the garden. Kitchen work will include planning, doing inventory, doing kitchen laundry, and preparing and serving meals. Garden work will include general labor, planting, weeding, harvesting, and processing produce for immediate use or preserving excess to use throughout the year.

Founded in 1965, Volunteers In Service To America (VISTA) has been on the forefront of ending poverty for over 50 years. These 10-week full-time positions are a great opportunity to get a taste for AmeriCorps service while having a positive impact in the community.
Benefits include AmeriCorps living allowance stipend (about $950/mo), an education award (about $1300) or end of service award (about $345), loan forbearance, and food benefits.
