Urban Connection Outdoor Educator Intern

This 24-week program is a rigorous work and learning experience that provides exposure to the Forest Service, development and training opportunities, and the opportunity to make a lasting impression on generations to come. Participants will gain experience in engaging urban residents in education programs about forests and nature. Position will include significant time on the road to other Midwest and East Coast states as part of Wilderness Inquiry's Canoe Mobile program. 

Job Responsibilities:
  • Promote urban residents' awareness and understanding of the natural resources and environmental issues in their communities and natural resources related careers through the development and presentation of environmental education and outreach materials at events and youth programs.
  • Through Wilderness Inquiry learn how to effectively interact with youth and adults about water safety and environmental education, steer a 10 person Voyageur canoe, and drive a 15 passenger van with a trailer. There will also be opportunities to be certified in wilderness first aid and water safety.
  • Through the Greening Youth Foundation and the USDA Forest Service receive training in defensive driving, federal resume building, and networking with other Resource Assistants.
  • Training funds are available to visit a National Forest to learn more about career opportunities.
  • Travel as a USDA Forest Service representative with Wilderness Inquiry's urban education program, Canoe mobile for 6-10 weeks, leading canoe based field trips on local waterways.
  • Assist USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station with research projects on topics such as climate change and strategic futures planning.

Duration: 6 months (full-time)

$12/hour
$1250 for training, travel, and/or professional development 
Health Insurance for 6 months
