Special Education Teacher (2020-2021 School Year)

REPORTS TO:   Principal/Special Education Administrator
 
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
This position provides instruction and other educational supports such as case management to special needs students and assisting them in their academic and social development. Candidates should have experience with implementation of researched and evidenced based strategies and understand the needs of a diverse student population.
  1.  QUALIFICATIONS:License:   Valid Illinois Professional Educator License with an LBSI.
  2.     2. Education:Required – Bachelor’s or Master's degree in Education from an accredited college or university.
 
  1. Experience: 
  2.  Required – Two (2) years of successful teaching experience required. 
  3. Preferred – Two (2) years of prior experience working with a diverse student population in an urban school setting
4. Language Skills:
   A. Preferred - Bilingual Spanish 
  1.  ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:Plan and instruct students using District approved curriculum as appropriate based on student needs
  2. Modify and adapt lessons and curriculum, as needed to meet individual student's needs and IEP goals
  3. Provide direct instruction using a variety of techniques including individualized instruction, lectures, team teaching, co teaching, hands-on formats and other instructional strategies
  4. Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity, interests, and abilities of students
  5. Work collaboratively and regularly with colleagues to ensure individual student's needs are met
  6. Actively participate on problem solving and intervention teams to facilitate early involvement and resolution to learning or behavioral needs
  7. Provide case management of Individualized Educational Plan (IEP)
  8. Demonstrate considerable knowledge of current best practices, laws, including due process and Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and interventions regarding the education of special needs students
  9. Exhibit considerable knowledge of specific disabilities and familiarity with common children's mental health disorders, as well as specific strategies/interventions to use in the classroom
  10. Set and maintain appropriate standards of classroom behavior that are consistent with administration policies and develop rules for classroom behavior, which are enforced in a fair and just manner
  11. Employ a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media consistent with the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved
  12. Assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis, provide progress reports as required, and communicate with parents as deemed necessary
  13. Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation
  14. Contribute to the decisions made by the district and building regarding facilities, curriculum, and professional development
  15. Work to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents concerning both the broad academic and behavioral progress of all assigned students
  16. Exhibit behavior consistent with the district vision, mission and belief statements
  17. Establish and maintain cooperative relations with others
 
  1. OTHER PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:Attends and participates in staff meetings
  2. Attends and facilitates IEP meetings
  3. Ensures that teams are utilizing concepts of least restrictive environment and best practices with students
  4. Develops data collection and data management systems; entering data into proprietary and other computer databases; analyzing data, identifying student needs
  5. Assist in upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulations, and board policy
  6. Prepare for classes assigned, and show written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisor
  7. Assumes responsibility for his or her continuing professional growth and development by attendance at professional meetings, membership in professional organizations, enrollment in advanced courses, and by reading professional journals and other publications
  8. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities
  9. Assists in other areas as needed
  10. Completes other duties as assigned
 
  1. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:Considerable knowledge of core curriculum areas for which the teacher is responsible for instructing
  2. Considerable knowledge of educational philosophy, teaching methods and approaches, and currently researched best practices and strategies
  3. Knowledge of child development 
  4. Knowledge of classroom management and instructional techniques 
  5. Knowledge of learning theory, students' learning styles and needs, and theories of multiple intelligences 
  6. Knowledge of multicultural, gender and disability fair curriculum concepts
  7. Knowledge of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and Response to Intervention (RtI)
  8. Skill in classroom and behavior management, as well as classroom presentation
  9. Skill in interpersonal relations, especially regarding working as a member of a team and the ability to work with students and staff in stressful situations
  10. Skill in organization, and in verbal and written communications
  11. Skill in transitional service planning and remedial instruction
  12. Skill in utilizing computer technology for educational purposes
  13. Skill in working with students having a wide range of disabilities
  14. Ability to interact effectively with students, parents, and other school staff, the administration, and community members of diverse ethnic/racial and socioeconomic backgrounds
  15. Ability to adapt teaching styles to diverse student populations
  16. Ability to apply the principles of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and Response to Intervention (RTI)
  17. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  18. Ability to evaluate student performance and to present these evaluations in a manner that fosters higher student achievement
  19. Ability to multi task
  20. Ability to be flexible regarding meeting the changing needs of students, as well as the varying modifications to District and State mandates
  21. Ability to plan and implement lesson plans based upon District and school goals, as well as the objectives, needs and abilities of students
  22. Ability to utilize computer and multimedia technology, as appropriate
  23. Ability to create a structured and efficient working environment for students
  24. Ability to develop and update curriculum, lesson plans and associated materials necessary to meet the unique needs of the special education students
  25. Ability to develop relevant assessment tools, and integrate the results of the assessments into instructional units
  26. Ability to work in a cooperative learning environment
  27. Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds
 
Technical:     
  1. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office and Google Applications
  2. Works effectively with data to increase student learning
  3. Ability to effectively use and integrate technology appropriately in daily work
  4. Knowledge of instructional technology (Smart Boards, Promethean Boards, Document Cameras, etc.)
 
Interpersonal:
  1. Maintains open and effective communication with administration, other staff members, parents and students
  2. Presents himself/herself as a team member when relating to teachers, students, administrators, parents and the community
  3. Demonstrates and encourages respect for students, staff and parents
  4. Maintains appropriate confidentiality when discussing student concerns
  5. Must be fair, supportive and unprejudiced when working with students and staff
  6. Must exhibit sound judgment in dealing with people
  7. Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds
 TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Full-time, 180 days as defined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
 SALARY RANGE:  As per Collective Bargaining Agreement
 EVALUATION: Conducted as per state requirements and/or Collective Bargaining Agreement
