Student Trainee (Legal )

This is a SUMMER 2020 internship position. To learn more about our Summer Intern Program and the activities involved, click here: FERC Summer Internships

This internship is located in the Office of Administrative Law Judges (OALJ). FERC administrative law judges are, in effect, the trial judiciary of the federal energy industry. They operate in much the same fashion as federal district court judges presiding over complex civil, non-jury cases. FERC judges preside over all cases set for hearing by the Commission, issuing initial decisions that form the basis for the Commission’s final orders. In addition to decisions there are many orders issued on motions, often after oral argument. FERC judges also serve as mediators and assist the parties in settling complex disputes with large monetary impacts.

**At time of application, applicant must submit proof of current enrollment in a degree-seeking program. If selected, applicant must provide proof of continuing education through either the Summer or Fall 2020 semesters.**

These positions are temporary, they may be converted to a full time, career-conditional position. Any conversions to full time or career-conditional status is neither implied nor guaranteed.

More than one position may be filled for openings.
Major duties of the Legal Intern:
  • Provide a complete range of administrative and basic legal research assistance in support of multiple FERC Administrative Law Judges.
  • Draft procedural orders scheduling conferences, hearings, postponements, and subpoenas for Judge's signature.
  • Communicates case-related information to FERC staff, the energy bar, representatives of regulated companies, and members of the public. Screens visitors and phone calls.
  • Ensures documents are in proper format and follow Commission guidelines and that spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar are accurate.
  • Produces various written documents utilizing a personal computer with advance functions and several types of office automation software for issuance to the public.
  • Performs research and compiles data and other material, which may be required by the Judge. Effectively utilizes Commission tracking systems to conduct analysis in cases pending before the judges.
