Customer Service Mechanic Journeyman or Apprentice
Note: Many qualifications listed below apply to Journey level candidates.
- Related training through an accredited electrical apprenticeship program may be substituted for the two years formal education, as determined by the JATC.
- Basic knowledge of the National Electric Safety Code (NESC), National Electric Code (NEC), and Alliant Service Standards.
- Knowledge of electric utility systems operation, maintenance and construction practices.
- Must obtain and maintain a valid driver's license of appropriate grade.

We are actively recruiting a highly skilled Journeyman or Apprentice level, Line Mechanic that is interested in joining a collaborative team in Cedar Rapids, IA. This is an exciting, challenging, and critical position that is responsible for constructing, dismantling, maintaining, replacing, repairing, and operating electric facilities.This position has a residency requirement of 35 minutes from headquarters.
This position may participate in a Boot Camp and on-the-job training may take place in multiple sites throughout IP&L geographic territory. Travel, overnight lodging and expenses will be handled in accordance with bargaining agreement.
Job Responsibilities :
Job Duties:
- Install, tension, tie in and remove conductors/ guys.
- Install/remove, frame and climb poles, towers and other structures.
- Operate basket trucks, digger trucks, trenchers, backhoes and all other construction equipment.
- Restore electric service lost due to weather, equipment failure, or whatever cause, in a safe and prompt manner.
- Install and maintain street and security lighting equipment.
- Operate and maintain hydraulic/air tools and systems.
- Install underground electrical equipment including cable, switchgear, cable terminations and other related gear.
- Know and understand safety and construction standards.
- Trained in CPR and First Aid.
- Load and haul poles, transformers and material to job sites.
- Trim trees from power lines and operate chipper to dispose of brush.
- Install and transfer cablevision/telephone line during new and rebuild projects overhead/underground (requires no terminations or splicing and no entry to phone or cable pedestals).
- Field test and maintain line type transformers only, including taking oil samples
- Practice good housekeeping and equipment maintenance.
- Maintain truck stock and material inventory.
- May require mapping and paperwork related to job order changes.
- Perform daily equipment inspections.
- Installs, splices and secures conductors.
- Installs, changes, transfers and removes poles, poles line hardware, guys, transformers, lightning arresters, capacitor banks, regulators, fuses, electrical cable, cross-arms, energized conductors, insulators, conduit and any and all forms of electrical material and accessories utilized in the construction, maintenance, and operation of electrical circuits.
- Works on energized lines and equipment. Works with live line maintenance tools, Keeps informed on and abides by the required Safety Rules, Operating Practices and codes pertaining to all phases of line work.
- May lead and assist in training others in the same or lower classifications.
- Performs other duties, which are similar, related or incidental to this position and assist in other activities that do not require skills of a higher classification.
- Respond to emergency callouts to insure the safety of the public and employees.
- Will work in a variety of adverse weather conditions as system condition warrant (i.e. outages, storm restoration, etc.)

Working Conditions - Varied outdoor work, involves a great deal of climbing, sometimes under disagreeable weather conditions and temperatures, work long and abnormal hours, work at high altitudes, work alone and with others, subject to 24 hour call out, work with and around chemicals, work with electrical and mechanical equipment, drive and operate equipment.
Job Qualifications :
Qualifications - Good reading comprehension, mathematics skills; successful completion of line mechanic apprenticeship; satisfactory passage of line mechanic examination; demonstrated ability to do ordinary line construction, operating and maintenance work, line trouble shooting and transformer installation including three-phase and parallel banking; reasonable knowledge of work order procedure and allocation of charges; knowledge of the requirements of the State Electrical Code and company standards for line construction; familiarity with live line maintenance tools and their use; thorough knowledge of the Company Safety Rules and Operating Practices relating to line construction and maintenance; ability to write clearly and concisely, make understandable diagrams, ability to express oneself orally; possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License prior to the end of probationary period; and the ability to perform the physical requirements of the job; sensitivity to public opinion and property owner's rights. Ability to work effectively in a culturally diverse work group.
NOTE: This position is covered by the Department of Transportation regulations on drug/alcohol testing (CFR 49, Parts 40 and 382), and is subject to drug/alcohol testing according to said regulations.
Physical Requirements: Climbing (poles, ladders and steel towers, etc.), excessive walking (including rough terrain and steep inclines), lift up to 100 pounds, push and pull heavy objects, bending/kneeling/ stooping/twisting/reaching (including working aloft in a bucket truck, on a pole, ladder, etc. while controlling an object), standing for long periods of time, ability to meet minimum climbing qualifications as outlined in the apprentice training program.
