Directional Drill Operator

Job Responsibilities :
  • Operates horizontal directional drill in accordance with blueprints and designated plans
  • Operates directional drill locating equipment
  • Maintains company equipment per service requirements and safety guidelines
  • Performs simple maintenance on drilling equipment including but not limited to vice jaw changes, sub saver installation, etc…
  • Assists with construction clean-up as necessary
  • Drives truck with trailer attached, hauling directional drill or associated equipment to the work site as directed.
  • Any other duties and responsibilities as assigned
  • Work outside in varying weather conditions
  • Must be able to operate backhoe, trencher, mini excavator, digger/derrick truck, large system boom trucks (with a crew) and associated equipment
  • Underground installation of fiber, electric and gas utilities and associated equipment
  • Expose existing utilities, could be required to do this with the use of hand tools
  • Use of underground locating equipment to identify utilities 
  • Install underground utilities (gas, electric, fiber, etc.) 
  • Performs the necessary clerical work to account for mapping of material/equipment installed, material usage and time as required.
  • Perform route planning and mapping with GPS technology
  • Classification may assist line and gas crews, when able.
  • Have general knowledge of material used in construction of electrical and gas systems.
  • May work alone when safe and/or may work with crews.
  • Utility type duties.
  • Patrol lines.
  • Obtain and deliver equipment, materials and supplies to and from storeroom or other locations.
  • Perform minor maintenance duties of truck and associated equipment.
Job Qualifications :
  • High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) preferred
  • Previous experience in standard and high-risk areas preferred
  • Previous experience in underground installation and handling of fiber, electric and gas utilities
  • Boring Machine Operator: 
  • Directional Drill locating 
  • Underground utility and/or cable work: 1 year (preferred)
  • Knowledge of utility depths and placements
  • Possess general knowledge of construction practices
  • Knowledge of reading and understanding blueprints is required
  • Possess a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A (with tanker endorsement/possibly air brake endorsement as well)
  • Willing to work outdoors in all types of weather (i.e. snow, rain, wind, etc.) if required
  • Ability to work in various environments/settings with moderate to loud noise levels
  • Equipped to work in trenches, manholes and tunnels
  • Prepared to sit, stand, stop, crouch, reach and lift for long periods of time
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs. unassisted
