Engineering Intern/ Co-Op

JOB TITLE:  ENGINEERING INTERN / CO-OP

TITLE OF SUPERVISOR: ENGINEERING MANAGER

  • Education…...Currently enrolled in an Associate’s degree or Bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing, Mechanical Design or Engineering
  • Job-Related Experience…………. No experienced required, but some manufacturing is preferred
 
POSITION SUMMARY: The Engineering Intern shall work closely with the Engineering Department team on various engineering related tasks and projects and improve plant efficiencies. The responsibilities of Engineering Intern vary based on assignments and department needs. This is a great opportunity for a driven student to learn about the corporate work environment in a challenging and dynamic organization. CORE DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Continually evaluate manufacturing processes to identify opportunities for improvement in order to drive down costs and improve quality.
  • Responsible for work center design and product/process flow including ergonomic considerations, lean manufacturing technology, mechanical design, and/or equipment and tooling usage to optimize the manufacturing process.
  • Coordinate activities in scrap reduction, elimination of rework, material variances, labor variances, safety & ergonomic evaluations, and overall continuous improvement in assigned areas.
  • Analyze current capabilities versus future production needs based on expected customer demand and establish machine, tooling, and process requirements.
  • Follow through on equipment implementation by gathering user feedback, designing and building any system improvements, and monitoring any future needs.
  • Plan, justify, execute, and monitor projects related to manufacturing equipment and tooling procurement.
  • Develop production routing, work measurement standards, manufacturing set-up and work instructions, work center descriptions, etc. for operations in assigned areas.
  • Provide support to the Maintenance Department to develop detailed instructions for preventative and predictive maintenance tasks for the upkeep of equipment.
  • Collaborate with the Manufacturing staff to ensure that all unit performance goals and objectives are supported.
  • Take direction on assignments and then work autonomously or with appropriate team(s) to accomplish assignment objectives.
  • Learn to work safely and efficiently, while maintaining accuracy.
  • Summarize and present a summary of projects and lessons learned at end of internship, if applicable.

  • Familiarity or ability to become intimately familiar with manufacturing process.
  • Interested in working primarily in a hands-on, production floor environment

PREFERRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:
  • Intermediate computer skills with Microsoft Excel, Power Point, Word, Outlook and field-specific software.
  • Intermediate math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, comparative analysis, measurements, statistical analysis).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Possess finger dexterity to write, type, and use a calculator. Maintain adequate vision to view small print and product details. Ability to navigate throughout the plant, speak and hear, and climb up/down stairs on a frequent basis.
