Office of Health Equity and Inclusion: Health Equity Summer Scholars Program (HESSP)

Since 2012, the Nemours Office of Health Equity has been funding scholarships to current undergraduate students to learn about health disparities through summer research projects.
Thirteen scholarships are available this year:
The program is based at the Wells Fargo Tower - 2200 Concord Pike, 7th floor, Wilmington, DE.
Each scholarship recipient receives a $4300 monetary award (stipend.)
Eligibility requirements include: 1) United States citizenship or legal permanent residency; 2) enrollment as an undergraduate student at the time the program starts. 3) Serve as a mentor to our STEM Up High School Interns.
This year the program begins June 1, 2020 and ends on August 7, 2020. Participation is required throughout the ten-week, full-time program.
  • The program schedule is 8:30 - 5:00pm M - F for the duration of the internship.
  • Because of the rigorous nature of the program absences greater than three-days will not be granted; absences of any kind must be approved.

Individual projects are population based in nature and typically address pediatric health care disparities. Applicants are asked to rank their top three choices.

  2. Healthcare Disparities in Bridged Care of Pediatric to Adult Healthcare Services of Children with and without Special Medical Needs: National Survey of Children’s Health 2016-2017
  3. Variability in Parental Perceived Care Outcomes and Quality of Care within the Pediatric Healthcare System: National Survey of Children’s Health 2016-2017
  4. Pediatric Health Disparities in Post-Infection Acute Nephritic Syndrome: Systematic Review and Quantitative Evidence Synthesis (QES)
  5. Barbeque and its Association with Gastrointestinal Cancer: Systematic Review and Quantitative Evidence Synthesis (QES)
  6. Helicobacter Pylori and its Association with Pediatric Cancer: Systematic Review and Quantitative Evidence Synthesis (QES)
  7. Subpopulation Variances in Pediatric Lymphoma Cumulative Incidence, Mortality and Survival in the United States: Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (1975-2016)
  8. Subpopulation Variances in Pediatric Retinoblastoma Cumulative Incidence, Mortality and Survival in the United States: Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (1975-2016)
  9. Subpopulation Variances in Pediatric Rhabdomyosarcoma Cumulative Incidence, Mortality and Survival in the United States: Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (1975-2016)
  10. Subpopulation Variances in Risk Behavior Trends among LGBTQ Youth: Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System, 2015-2017

In this program participants are required to:
  • Attend lectures and statistics clinics.
  • Complete an individual project.
  • Present findings to a large audience of associates and students' families.
  • Present posters to a variety of audiences.
  • Actively participate and interact in journal club sessions.
  • Work in a team setting including group projects.
Participants also have the option to:
  • Participate in the shadowing experiences (patient/care observation).
  • Attend grand rounds.
  • Attend Nemours Sponsored events.
  • Complete additional online training.
