Community & Economic Development Manager (or Sr)

Keys to success in this role will be building strong relationships with external partners and community leaders and driving strategies for attraction, expansion and retention of businesses and industries throughout the communities we are privileged to serve in Iowa.
  • This position can be based in one of the following locations in Iowa: Ames, Cedar Rapids, or Des Moines.
  • This role could be filled at a higher level depending on candidate qualifications.

Job Responsibilities :
  • Has primary responsibility to successfully establish, maintain and enhance credibility, communications and relationships with key external partners.
  • Work closely with new and existing businesses to gather and evaluate information needed to assist them in making sound location decisions as well as assist in expansion of existing facilities.
  • Effectively communicates with national, state, and community-level economic development officials and community elected and appointed officials to increase company visibility and the internal understanding of key economic policy and development issues.
  • Acts as a spokesperson and represents the company to municipal officials, local leaders, state agency officials, etc. on economic and community development issues.
  • Acts as a professional resource and liaison to commercial businesses, industries, and communities with their development strategies and plans including information and technical advice on grants, loans, incentives, land use issues and community planning and development.
  • Represents the company on area development committees and with state or national area development organizations. Acts as a primary resource to management and the field organization on economic development and community development issues.
  • Establishes and maintains effective communication with key community leadership and related resources to increase company visibility and the internal understanding of key community development issues.
  • May negotiate franchise agreements with communities.
Job Qualifications :
Education & Experience Requirements:

Manager Level:
  • Bachelor's degree with an emphasis in business administration, planning, economics, marketing, communications, or related area.
  • 3 years professional/technical experience in industrial or commercial customer relations/account management or professional business experience in either economic or community development
  • In the absence of a degree, seven years of related experience is required.
Sr. Manager Level:
  • Bachelor's degree with an emphasis in business administration, planning, economics, marketing, communications, or related area.
  • 5 years professional/technical experience in industrial or commercial customer relations/account management or professional business experience in either economic or community development
  • In the absence of a degree, nine years of related experience is required.
Other Requirements
  • Must be willing to travel.
  • Travel can include occasional overnight stays.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
Knowledge, Skill, and Ability Requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret federal and state safety, energy and environmental regulations preferred.
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to negotiate contracts and service agreements preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to use computer software programs (e.g. e-mail, word processing, spreadsheet and project management) preferred.
