JOB SUMMARY:

The Mobility Mentor promotes educational and economic opportunity for clients in The Family Partnership’s In-Home programs, and parents of children enrolled in our therapeutic preschools. Mobility Mentoring is an evidence-based educational/economic mobility coaching approach that seeks to increase participants’ intrinsic motivation to improve their economic status and educational attainment. The model uses coaching as its core strategy, which can be supplemented by other individual/group education and resources. This position works to break intergenerational cycles of poverty and adversity by promoting educational and economic opportunity. Children benefit from their parents’ success in increasing their education, regular employment, and household income.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

      Mobility Mentoring Coaching:

  • Use the Bridge to Self-Sufficiency as a tool to help participants assess their overall financial stability and well-being, including their educational attainment, employment history, household income, debt/savings, and personal and family stability.

  • Coach participants around goal setting, using the Bridge as a tool to set specific goals to advance on one or more pillars of the Bridge.

  • Provide regular 1:1 coaching and individual/group education (i.e., budgeting, financial literacy, tenant rights and responsibilities, etc.) to support participants in completing high school/attaining a GED, and in pursuing post-secondary educational goals, as well as employment and other economic mobility goals.

  • Coordinate coaching and related activities with services provided by other TFP staff who are working with the parent, including In-Home case managers and Early Childhood teachers and staff.

Develop Educational and Employment Partnerships:

  • In partnership with the In-Home Supervisor, Preschool Directors, and related staff develop partnerships with mentoring and educational organizations (i.e., post-secondary education such as trade schools, community colleges, and universities/colleges) in order to advance educational opportunity for Mobility Mentoring participants.

  • In partnership with In-Home Supervisor, Preschool Directors, and related staff, develop partnerships with employment services providers and with prospective employers to facilitate the placement of participants into the formal employment sector of the economy.

Provide Community Education and Outreach:

  • Participate in Preschool center and In-Home program outreach strategies to parents, community members, and other community organizations, to educate stakeholders about Mobility Mentoring and recruit participants from among the families served by our In-Home and Early Childhood programming.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

  • B.S. degree in early childhood education, social work, human services, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience providing services in the area of education/employment coaching and financial/economic empowerment with low-income individuals.
  • Experience working with parents who are low-income, homeless/precariously housed, and disenfranchised individuals is a must.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to understand the Mobility Mentoring model and to implement it with fidelity. Staff will be trained in the model by EMPath, the national organization responsible for Mobility Mentoring.
  • Knowledge of coaching-based approaches, and other approaches such as case management.
  • Knowledge of financial literacy and economic empowerment tools, such as Four Cornerstones of Financial Literacy.
  • Ability to work effectively with parents and families in high poverty, high adversity environments;
  • Ability to help parents overcome significant educational and employment barriers.
  • Ability to provide advocacy for clients so that they are able to utilize services equitably.
  • Clean driving record, ability to maintain a clean driving record and meet the agency's driving requirements.  

Licenses and/or Certifications:

  • Valid Minnesota driver's license.
